What makes 5cyl or any odd numbered engine (v10s included) have that "undertone", is they create a "beat frequency" in the exhaust note.
Wikipedia: "In acoustics, a beat is an interference between two sounds of slightly different frequencies, perceived as periodic variations in volume whose rate is the difference between the two frequencies."

A 110 Hz A sine wave (cyan), a 104 Hz G# sine wave (magenta), their sum (blue) and the corresponding envelope 6 hz. (red)

I believe it has to do with the fact that the firing pulses don't line up with one revolution of the crank. I know fives have a firing pulse every 144°, but I think it has to do with the fact you're trying to lay five over two... if that makes sense! (if your'e a drummer you know what I mean)!
I also believe 3's 7's and inline 9's should sound similar if not the same.

on the m3 rally video. its a normally aspirated m3 motor. i believe it was 2.4 or so 4 cyl. and i found a different video of that same car, and its a sequential transmission

What's the configuration? sounds like a 4cyl to me....
I know the old school GP bikes were 2 strokes, some were "V3s"!

yep, all 4cylinders now, I think they're all V'4s too, i could be wrong.
4 stroke, 800cc, figure about 250+ hp on a 350lb machine.

That's about the same or greater hp to weight than an F1 car. But! an F1 car can put it power to the ground better, especially at high speeds.

just saw this last night

http://videos.streetfire.net/video/FIAT-Marea-turbo-402m_183243.htm

and since noone has posted vr6 sounds, I'll do it for ya

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OafCq1izXE

and I must say, a tear or two came to my eyes as I watched those auto union cars.

An oldschool hemi has also been known to bring a tear to the eye of my father as well as my own. Smile

I love cars.

I haven't found anything recently that I think sounds better

There's a vid out there of some guy balsting around on some twisties and through some tunnels in the GT but I can't find it.

The I5 is so unique sounding, it's great. Other engines I love to hear are Flat 6's in Porsches, VR6's, and a 2.7T with ASP exhaust Drool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLIxGqPTdrA

V8's don't reallyl do much for me, but I like the sound of most exotic engines V10, etc.

a large bore tt exhaust from AJ6 engineering, on a v-12 Jag with steroids. Sounds similar to the twin six cylindered fuel dragsters of the 60's.
