Right now the locker is fun for some slideways driving when I wanna play, just push a button and poof, locked rear. At some point perhaps a torsen or such might sneak it's way in there. But with the uber spngy stock suspension I lift/unweight the inside rear too much for a torsen to really do anything mid-corner.
If those front 'halfshafts' don't work out, I was looking under the business end of a 993 with a DIY turbo conversion that nuked a tranny last weekend, while looking for the front diff and drivetrain (learned the car started as a normal 993 after this), I saw there was some sort of nice bolt/washer/nut system keeping the hubs and bearings happy.
Yeah, you could prob chop the Joint off leaving only the stub end and get rid of some rotational mass. I guess it would also be nice to get rid of the front outputs in the transmission and you could move it back if you felt like cutting the firewall How close is the bolt pattern to a VW TDI? There is a place making an adapter for VW TDI to Toyota transmissions.
you wouldn't have to cut the firewall... just lower the engine and tranny to fit under the steering rack. but it's a whole ton of work involved i bet, messing with the exhuast mounting, oil pan and all that.

I was thinking of modding my spare 01A by removing the front diff, blocking off the L & R outputs... then eliminating the torsen. I was considering this while watching a tech at work rebuild an 01A gearbox. I've had discussions with that tech about him wanting to swap a RWD driveline with a small block chevy into a B5 A4 quattro. Thing is... he's the sort of guy that will do it, his last project was a rather absurd wrangler. He's just waiting for the right customer to sell him their sludged up 1.8T A4 for a gran or two.
