When I was 14 and looking for my first car I wanted a WRX or a 4000 turbo. Little did I know at the time the 4000 was never made in a turbo and the WRX was too much for my budget and insurance would be crazy high. I settled for a mk2 GTI which I still have and too much money and time has been dumped into. Anyway, my 4000 bug never left and I knew it was only a matter of time before I bought one. On August 3rd I bought a clean '87 4000 Quattro on Ebay. I got it for 1250 with a salvage tittle and some sweet stuff.I drove 12 hours round trip to get it with no problems. On with the photos.

Hella light bar. Lights not included :(
Hella dual air horns
Bilstein Sport Struts all around
Shine Racing Service RealStreet springs 250lb front 250lb rear
Bildon Motorsport Wheel Stud/nut conversion
Blaufergnugen 272 Camshaft
Blaufergnugen Short shift kit
Audi 5000 turbo external oil cooler.
Control arms, strut housings, other suspension bracketry professionally powdercoated
VDO Coolant temp, Oil Temp, Oil Pressure gauges in 034efi pod on dashboard
Power windows (all working)
Power door locks (all working)
Center and rear differential locks (fully functional)
Air conditioning converted to R134a and blows ICE COLD
Quattro script interior
Alpine CDA-9807 CD player
Custom half-smoked/half red tail lamps
My $500 S4 that I left out of gear and no handbrake on. It was a great car. :frustrated:

Hella lights not included. Going to buy some off Ebay soon.

Parts:

3b flywheel and clutch.

ebay manifold. Welds look good and I could not make one for the price I bought this for.

My plan for the car is Megasquirt MS1 COP. I will be using the stock transmission in the 4k. I know it will be a short ratio tranny which is not optimal for this engine but oh well...already sold the S4 tranny. I hope to have the engine in by next summer. It would be in sooner but I am 3 hours away from the car at college. I changed the timing belt, front main seal, waterpump, thermostat, and tensioner.

Need:
Powersteering adapter brackets so I can use the 4k pump.
All the MS stuff.
Shorter serpentine belt (A/C removed)
Rear coolant flange
Intercooler/piping/connectors
Downpipe (will make myself)
7A oil pan and pick up tube. (AAN pan will not work...right?)

This thread will be full of questions and ANY suggestions are greatly appreciated. I want to thank Tim, Dana, and some other guys on the board for answering all my PM questions. Thanks guys!
and many many more things.

:) Mine is at the slow no progress stage intill september. Working two jobs zaps all my energy and when I do have time it's spent getting my DD MK2 up to snuff. Spent my last day off busting out a rear brake job, bearings, heater blower motor, engine clean up and a bunch of other small crap that added up to pretty much all my free time. Expect more on the 4kq about a month or so!

Btw was the S4 500 bucks before or after the wreck!?!?! Either way you have got a sweet deal right there! Do you plan on using the S4 tranny?

I love me some mk2. I have had a bunch of them and they have treated me well. You got a good deal on yours. I bought the S4 for 500 bones BEFORE it was wrecked. Already sold the S4 tranny.

why are you wanting to go MS when the AAN mgt is very good?
I am going to use MS because wiring will be MUCH easier. I put it in my GTI and like it. It would take a lot of tedious work to make the S4 harness talk to the 4k. Also, I have already sold the ECU, MAF, flywheel, and other misc parts off the harness. I do know that MS does not have sequential injection but from what I have read it does not make much difference in power...just MPG and lower RPM smoothness. I have the MS controller, trigger wheel/crank pulley, wideband 02 sensor, and VR sensor all lined up ready to buy. Overall, if I had some local Audi guys that had done this swap before and were familiar with the different wiring in the cars, I would probably stay with AAN motronic. I feel more comfortable with MS and sure that I can make it run without many headaches (probably not the case :D ) I am still open to input.

the 4k requires very very little input from the oem ecu, and the passenger engine compartment harness in the 4k takes care of the gauges already.

Good luck with that Exh Mani. I've heard very bad things...
I haven't heard anything bad about it. We will see if the saying "you get what you pay for" is true. Did you have this manifold on your car?

#12 ·
Are you planning to keep the AAN intake manifold? If so, it's gonna be a serious challenge keeping the A/C. You already have to reposition the radiator to clear the manifold, and there's barely enough room for the radiator itself, never mind A/C condenser and fan.

"My $500 S4 that I left out of gear and no handbrake on. It was a great car. :frustrated: "

Let me guess: Your car rolled down a hill or decline and a wind-gust invited it for joy ride?

Similar $hit happened to my '86 5KTQ about a year ago. I parked the car in neutral with a dismal hand-brake in my drive-way, which has a very, very slight decline towards the entrace/gate. Went inside the house to use the computer and about and hour later my wife, who had a good visual of the car from the kitchen, started screaming that the car was rolling down the drive-way. :curses: :frustrated:

I ran out like a bat out of hell just to see the car's rear-end smash-open the chain-link gate and roll out to the street. Since the street sits higher than where the gate is, the car rolled back into the lower portion of the drive-way.

The damage?

Broken driver's side outer-most tail light and slight scuff on the bumper and a bent gate. Got to love those heavy duty bumpers on the Type44 chassis :woowoo:

I am taking out the A/C. I already have the A/C compressor off and will be ordering a shorter serp belt. I will be keeping the AAN intake manifold and modifying the radiator position. I saw some one else on MG do it. What are you doing for your set up?

Yup, I just got back from school for summer break. I was super stoked to see my S4 and got in it, started right up like a charm! I turned the car off and went inside with a big smile on my face. Returned outside with my wallet and when I look up it is rolling down my hill. My heart sank knowing what was coming. It rolled through our horse fence and down the hill. I saw it catch air over a big hump in the horse pasture. Then it hit a big log and did some sort of trick barrel roll/360/kick flip non sense. In summary, my car was not as lucky as yours. That was a bad day. But, good things have come of it. Now it will be in my 4000 and running within a year.

Nice car! Was this car from Georgia?
Thanks! It is from Virginia.

UPDATE:

I recently bought and 034 IB controller, Hella 500 lights, Speedline wheels from a CQ, 7A cams, 60-2 trigger crank pulley, VR sensor/bracket (from Derracuda), and new exhaust manifold studs. My Dad drove the car to work one day and says it has no heat and there is standing water in the trunk. I am going to see if the heatercore lines are looped in the engine bay. If not, I guess I need a new heatercore or need to unclog it. As for the water in the trunk, I don't know. I will inspect all the seals and see if any are missing.
Over college winter break I will be cleaning up the AAN engine, do a head gasket job, install 7A cams, figure out how I will mount the 4k P/S pump while retaining the serp. belt, mount the VR sensor/bracket, install the new crank pulley, and maybe put some more Hella lights on the front. For now I am stoked on the 034 efi purchase and getting to drive the piss out of the 10v this winter. :D

Before you swap the heater core, make sure the heater valve is actually opening. On my Quantum, the end of the ball valve crumbled where it was supposed to key into the lever. (Will make sense when you see it) The valve was stuck in the closed position, of course.

I replaced the heater core anyway because I'd bought it, and i thought I was smelling coolant now and then. And it was about 15 minutes worth of work once the evaporator case was removed, which was something I planned on doing anyway to make the wiring/ECU installation easier.

You were right! Flipped that valve and I have heat.

Ok, so it has been a long time since I could work on the car since I am 3 hours away from my garage. Being at college has its draw backs.

European Autosports in Kingsport TN is where I am doing the work. Eddie and Allen are nice enough to let me use the extra bay at their shop to work on the engine and their tools, cleaning chemicals, and overall advice. These guys are true enthusiasts that make me proud to be apart of the Audi community.
At first I was just going to bring the engine there to clean up the engine and put the 7A cams in. That changed to taking off the head, doing the head gasket, striping the head to replace valve seals+guides, rear main seal, water manifold seals, all gaskets replaced, steam cleaning oil pan/head/valve cover/other misc parts. I figure it is best to do it right the first time and not need to come back to it multiple times. I learned my lesson on my 16v MKII swap.
The progress you see from the photos is from one full day of work. It went pret
ty smoothly...only breaking 2 bolts that held the plastic guard in the 7A oil pan.

Tomorrow I'm going to pressure test my UrS4 aluminum end tank intercooler that was in the S4 wreck. Hopefully I'll get the block painted, valve guides/seals in, 7A cams in, exhaust manifold studs in, and crank trigger pulley from Derracuda. We'll see. I love having time away from school to get this stuff done. Enough rambling. Photos.

Dude! That line makes me realize I am old!
:D :D

Here are some more photos from a couple weeks ago.

FREE aluminum subframe bushings

7A cams.

IB controller and 7A harness. I think I will sell the 7A harness and buy an un-molested harness from 034 to start fresh with

Started on my catch can set up...just fooling around with some scrap aluminum. Some day down the road I will take out the stock set up and make my own.

Engine is DONE...aside from some small things to be painted/installed. This was my first engine rebuild. I am proud of the thorough and attention to detail build. Again, thanks to Eddie and Alan at European Autosports for answering all my questions.

Head back from being hot tanked

7A cams in, new valve guides/seals.

New exhaust manifold studs

Head on

While I was hand threading the new head bolts in I noticed one did not go in right. It was wobbling! Turns out VW/Audi sent us a bent bolt.

All back together. Disregard poor paint job on the coil cover. Soon to be re-done.
