Hi everyone!
Just bought my first audi, a 1991 200 avant 20 valve turbo with 260k. It was a daily for the guy until it just lost all propulsion. The gears click in the shifter but there is nothing, im think clutch went out..?

It is in fair condition, slight rear end hit tweaked the sheet metal, some rust too but i had to buy it, i mean how often does these come around? Is 150 imported into the us correct? Got her in the air today and it is quite the oily mess around the engine cradle area :o
Im trying to decide on what direction to take; quick and dirty clutch job, pull the motor and go thru everything around it, or swap the 3b into something lighter and part it out.

what do you guys think?

Depends how bad the rust and damage are. Also depends how much money, time and effort you want to sink into it. Post a few pics.

Working on uploading some pics for you all. BTW it also came with what the PO called S2 wheels...they are good looking fat spoked 16" wheels!
What do you think went out? clutch? is there something else that commonly goes? Seems the clutch is a PITA to get to on these cars. Im considering removing the engine and going thru the engine bay with the amount of bleeding the car is currently doing on my floor. How hard it is todo a clutch from the bottom without removing the engine?

PO also told me the rear diff locker actuator arm is broken, is there an upgrade or repair kit for this?
Im not new to wrenching on german cars but totally new to audis.

No idea what could be wrong with the no drive condition. Clutch seems plausible. If a CV joint brakes or an axle comes loose you will lose drive too. Hard to say with out actually seeing the car.

Removing the tranny to do the clutch job is usually the norm unless you have other reasons to pull the motor.

As far as the diff lock goes sounds like you need new a actuator hopefully nothing in the diff itself is broken in that case replacing the diff would be the cheaper/easier thing to do.

There are some articles on using a mercedes lock actuator in place of the factory audi part which is $$$ and probably NLA, of course you could also source a good used one.

So got it up in the air witha friend last night and bad news. The trans is shot. The amount of fluid that came out could only be measured in millicc's. Looks like all the rest was covering the outside of the trans and car. It is a mess under there! After seeig what everyone wants for a used trans i think im just going to part it out. The car isnt that pretty to bring it back to life.

I love the engine and want to see it run again tho. Personally im a bmw guy and could see it screaming in a e30. lightweight, rwd and i know them better. Has anyone ever done one? id need to figure out a few things:
what rwd trans bolts onto these engines?
how much input does the 3b ecu need to run the engine in another car?
any other good swap car ideas?

Well if anyone needs any parts lmk. i will make a part out thread soon too.

Don't part out an avant due to a bad trans! I see 016 transmissions for $100 all the time. You didn't buy this car in Colorado did you?

Where are you located? I know someone selling one here in TN. I recently picked up a 200 20v trans for my V8 5-spd swap for $150.

I would really hate to see a 20v parted out for such a little thing. Especially an Avant. Would you consider selling it as a whole?

i am in colorado springs, co. the car isnt in that great of overall condition so thats why i have decided against rebuild. it has some rust, hit in the rear corner, a/c doesnt work, rear diff isnt actuating etc etc.
Better to let it help other avant owners with parts than nothing else, right?

Let other 200 20v Avant owners get their spare parts from 200 10v Avants and worn out or wrecked 200 20v Sedans.
Since '91 200 20v Avants are such unicorns, I'd say it's better to keep even the rough ones on the road when possible. (I'm biased- I have two of them).

If you can't find a 200 20v transmission, you could also use a 200 10v transmission AND rear differential. Taller gears, perhaps better mileage.

Ah, so you bought that one that was on C/L? I have a free trans but it's in Seattle :P. There are TONS of those transmissions around Colorado that you can get for $50-$100. But are you sure it's the trans? There is a guy on here who broke one, but he was doing donuts with 500 hp. One broken CV joint will cause the car to not move, or a totally disintegrated clutch pressure plate. Either way, these cars always have a half dozen broken things on them due to being so complex, but they are still good cars. Get it up in the air and check the CV joints If they are all good, then pull the trans, planning to do the clutch no matter what.
