I had the chance to get a 87' Porsche 944 that had a small engine fire. Was looking around and found out that a 924 turbo clutch bell housing would bolt to the 944's torque tube and up to the AAN with a RS4 bell housing spacer plate. What if I substitute or add onto the spacer plate with a VR6 to 01E adapter plate. How would this work? I heard something about an RX7 clutch disc. Of what year I don't know. What about the flywheel? I was able to find the 924 turbo bell housing and purchased it already. What does anyone know or think about this? -Andy

Could be a fun and interesting project. The VR6 is a heavy engine, but would be potent with a turbo. The AAN is probably a better swap as it would be lighter at moderate comparable power levels. Also, the 5 cylinder swap has been done so there is information available. That being said, there are a few people working on 07K turbo swaps into this chassis, which IMO is the engine swap to have.

944 Torque tube will snap if you go much over the stock tq levels of an AAN/3b

Its the weakest point of the drive train

N/A 87 944 torque tube is the exact same as a 951 torque tube, and they have no issue holding power. You're probably thinking the N/A transmission, which is a weak link.

I see. So it would be a good idea to get the turbo trans? Your right the VR6 engine is heavy but what engine with that bolt pattern has an aluminum block?

Audi V8, Sport quattro 20vT (saw a bare block for sale for 5 grand), 2017 RS3/TTRS 2.5TFSI

v8 944 would be pretty cool really

A V8 944 would be cool. There are a few companies that make LS conversion kits. Never heard of an Audi V8 swap.

Does anyone know whether or not its a B5 RS4 bell housing spacer plate? I found one and would like to pull the trigger. A Audi V8 swap would be interesting I agree. Decisions... Decisions...

The spacers came on lots of cars, not just unique to an RS4. I believe B5 S4 and C5 01E cars all had them. I believe it comes down to what clutch you run anyways. They're easy to find so I'd figure out exactly what you want to do before you go buy one. They should be all over ebay for cheap, that's where I bought one.

The AAN is the engine Porshce should have done in this - of course then the performance of the 911 Turbo would have been challenged...

Several guys / companies in Europe have done this swap with great success... It's my next project.

Andy long time no talk to. In my personal
opinion you'd have way more fun with a 2.8l
or 3.2l 24v vr6 with a nice turbo then any of
the other options listed unless you turbo or SC
the v8 I say go with the vr6 or AAN. Just my 0.02.

I have decided to stay with my original plan and build a small bodied quattro. I have acquired too many things to change them now. If anyone knows of a 4kq, 80q, 90q or coupe quattro for sale that I can grab up from south Florida please let me know. -Andy
