Ahh yes the old pikes peak deal. That old story comes up every so often with my friend when his Grandfather is around. Best part of the story is when he drove it home from Bruno's to 'make sure everything was working properlly'.

Great pic's :bump:

I find it interesting that they built a gate around the shifter on the Pike's Peak car:

I wonder why? I don't remember seeing any other Audi factory cars with one. :?

Nice pics!

Four things:

Image

1) I want THIS exact tach. I can't find a flush mount VDO tach of this size and RPM limit. Anybody know any sources or see any recently?

2) That's a 10V set up for an 8KRPM redline!

3) Is that big orange lens for a shift light?

4) I could swear that that is a Beetle headlamp switch!

Maybe the gated shifter was to help lock out reverse (or keep from missing a shift, as on pike's peak would be disasterous).

AWESOME post! The lighting on these cars were really messing with my eyes though. I thought these were model replicas until I saw the interior and engine shots.

It is probably because the extended the shifter up to the wheel height for better access (I plan to do the same in the V8Q) . I cant quite make out how they did it but it probably has more throw than a regular shifter and hence more opportunity for messing it up. Hence the gate to help things go right. The consequences for missing a downshift on that race would not be good. (1000' drop off)

Hmm, good point. I didn't even notice how much longer the shifter was.
Good idea too. Taking some notes here...
