Last weekend some more progress... don't have the pics but the pass side rocker and rear fender are now off...
Picked up some square tubing for the jig as well, Craig thinks 2.5" is a bit of an overkill.. oh well... live only once.
This weekend I hope to have the jig welded onto the subframe dollys and be ready to cut the car in half... ;)
Hopefully I won't forget to take pics.

Martin - Will you be using this same technique to cut the car in half? :D

I was supposed to finish the jig last weekend, but I ran out of gas (welding) :D

So.. picked up a new bottle today and this evening finished up what I started.

Craig thinks it's a bit of an overkill, but I like it.

These Princess Auto engine stands are just great... will keep both subframes nice and square WRT each other.

This weekend hope to get some help and cut the front portion off.

Looks good Martin,

It's been a long day, I'm knackered, so I may be talking dribble here........... Do you think
the fact that the sub frames which can be moved independently, could possibly affect the uni-body
alignment when the front of the 4000 mates to the back of the urq?

I understand that the subframes will be in perfect harmony, we just need to make sure the body
is aligned also.........? I guess some nice reference lines would solve that?

Cheers,

Craig

p.s if I'm talking dribble here, I'll delete in the morning

Craig,
I thought the longitudinal square cross section tube kept the subframes aligned?

Anyway it looks good and hurry up and get it closed so I can borrow them :D

cheers, Mike

I made sure that both sides are welded at exact same height so as they come together there is no binding up/down.
Andy Krinks uses similar design but even more heavy duty, something I can't handle in my garage by myself.. :(

Yes but the body can move on the subframe.

Because we're bringing 2 halves together using the subrames as reference, there's a chance
the subframes are not square to the body, as you know the subrames can be moved for alignment purposes.

A few degress over the length of the car can make a big difference in the body alignment, but not affect the subrame alignment,
seeing as the jig will keep the subframes square.

Some careful measuring should compensate for this...maybe I'm over thinking here....I tend to do that :?

 :drive:

Agreed, measuring is a key, but at least you know the car will go down the road semi straight.. ;)

I have the body manual, so all the measurements are there (-320).
Plus we have the doors and rear fenders to make sure gaps are correct.

You had the luxury of having the two halves side by side before and after the cut.
I have to use something as a benchmark to start with since one of the halves is from another car.

Cheers

I guess there's nothing wrong with a 2 degree permanent power slide while driving straight down the highway

Another productive day.

After pickin up another 90 quattro for my wife (also white), Mr Cook dropped by and gave me a hand with THE CUT.

Here is the result..

Image

Subframe waiting for the other half.
Image

Then just slide it 320mm into place.. ;)
Image

Here is the left over floor section (already spoken for) hiding behind the body.
Image

And while I had extra hands, we flipped the 4kq section so I can yet again clean the undercoating from yet another floor... boundless joy!! :frustrated:
Image

Still plenty to go.

I love the way you fit all of that in your garage. Makes me wonder
where the new white 90 quattro and blue ur-q will go? Maybe hang
one from the ceiling or stack them on their sides 8)

Good work! I have to say time spent flanging parts doesn't feel much
like progress, but I have to imagine the bigger picture.... :frustrated:

cheers, Mike

Not as much of an update as Mr Cooks but, got couple of spare minutes and cleaned 1/2 of the floor.
Each time I do this I don't wish it on my worse enemy. :frustrated:

As you can see I didn't clean it all the way to the back, that portion will be cut away anyway.

Image

Couple of pin holes here and there... not as nice as the original Georgia Ur-q floor... oh well.

Image

Overall not bad for a Canadian winter beater... :o

Image

Hope to get couple of hours on the weekend and do the other side.. then it's fliparoo time to remove the other rocker.

Lots to go.

Few things showed up today, curtesy of the Polish connection.

Image
The one on the right is the factory street part.

Image
Incredable attention to detail.

Image
Rear piece that will engage the sport struts I have

Image
He sent me instructions to drill the subframe out to 12mm... rally cars used M12 hardware, learn something new everyday.

Also got these...
Image
The lower one I did not have at all and the middle one from factory is steel and for street car.

Image
Detail of the welds.

Tomorrow back to cleaning the damn floor.. :frustrated:
