Hello everyone. I've been lying low here for a few years. Finally time to contribute something. Two years ago I bought a cq as a winter car have haven't looked back. Back in May I purchased Tim's 20v 4kq. Fantastic ride.
http://www.motorgeek.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=25432
I had a lot of fun this year.

Image
(Image stolen from Tim's thread, I don't have any good ones)

Had an exhaust built locally by a friend and got the car back 2 weeks ago. Turned out great. The welds are fantastic and it's great to finally have a decent exhaust note.
Leaving his house and then getting on to the highway (the first real 3/4 throttle pull) their was a loud bang. Sounded like a misfire. The engine had stopped and I drifted off to the side of the road. Then we noticed that all the coolant was gone. Poured in another gallon or so and it disappeared. So...okay blown headgasket. No problem.

Just finished pulling the head. Gasket looks fine... It would appear that there is a hole in the cylinder wall. I can't get the piston to turn down low enough to see the hole though. The motor is obviously binding. If you look down one of the coolant/oil (not sure which). There is an obvious blowout.

and closer...

So It's hard to say for sure but I think it's time for a new motor.
I'm frustrated and excited at the same time. It's finally time for me to make this car mine.

Saw that ride in person. Love the seats. Hope you get the engine finished and back on the road before Fall.

A friend of mine said he's seen something like this before in low oil pressure situations. I have had some issues with light coming on in turn and stop signs recently. Looks like I'm getting a new oil pump now as well.

Sourced a new bottom end from that same friend. Should be on the stand next week ready for buildup.

Should have the new block next week. I'm going to build it for some power but I'll probably run the stock turbo through next year. I'll sell the rods from both motors and get some new scat rods. New oil pump, new timing belt kit. New clutch. I'd like to not have to pull the motor ever again.

The pistons should be fine to use right? I'm shooting for somewhere in the range of 300-400hp at the wheels.
Would anyone recommend a specific clutch/flywheel setup for this power range? I'll be putting some miles on this car so retaining somewhat stockish driveability will be key.

your stock pistons will be fine, i would recommend a full face clutch like the spec 3+. FYI, there isnt really a market for the stock rods since most of the 5 bangers (and a lot of vw's) have the same rods and they are not really an upgrade to anything.

Took a look at the oil pickup last night. Looks like filter mesh was seriously clogged. Looked like gasket maker or something. So the oil pump was trying to pull oil through 4 or 5 1/32" holes (out of ~100). That's the best guess so far as to what happened.

No low oil pressure light though from what I remember. At least not from the night the motor blew.

Damn. Sorry to see that Andy... Hopefully she's back on her feet soon, better than ever. That is such a great car - it'll be fully worth every bit of effort spent.

Finally got my tax return back. I'll be purchasing rods in the very near future. I'm clueless on rod bearing sizing though. Does anyone have a good link that can explain how to choose rod bearings?

Second question, and I know it's been asked alot, but while I'm in there, what should I be replacing in the new bottom end? I'm planning on getting the top and bottom end gasket kits from EFI express. I'll get a timing belt kit and a new crank gear once the engine is bolted up to the transmission.

First time in this thread and I have to say I LOVE That 4kq. As for Rod bearings, I am pretty sure it's a one size for each engine (someone correct me if I am wrong) . Of course this is unlike the mains and thrust bearings if you had the block line bored.

Plastigaged the rod bearings. .015" on each. Good, Bad, Indifferent?

Purchased a set of rods and bearings for the new motor from Hank (Shaved Quattro). Still waiting for a delivery date or some tracking info. Thursday I'll be purchasing any and all parts to complete the bottom end. Getting excited.

Sure did, thanks. Patching those dings and dents is currently low on the list for awhile but thank you very much.

Awesome thanks Hank.
-----------------------------------------

I've got a bottom end seal kit on the way. I'll be replacing the oil pump. New 3+ clutch. New crank pulley. New crank pulley bolt. Rods and Bearing obviously.

Quick question though, I'll be putting those new rods into a known well running motor, should I be doing anything with the pistons? New rings? I'd like to hope that I can get away with just popping them out, swapping the rods, and throwing them back in. Is that safe?

That's the plan. A friend talked me into it last week so rings are already on the way. Can someone recommend a ball hone? A part number or link would be great. Take some of the guess work out of it.
