01E 6 speed swap into 1991 V8 quattro 5 speed

I've come across a 2002 Audi A4 3.0 V6 with a 6 speed in the junkyard yesterday and I'm thinking it's an 01E, so I'm going to get it and put it in the 91 V8 quattro 5 speed car.

Do I need to get the axles and driveshaft? I might as well, and get the clutch too while I'm there, unless they won't be needed. I've heard the drive flanges might give me trouble, does anyone know if my 5 speed axles will bolt up to the 01E?

I'm also swapping my 3.6 V8 with a blown headgasket and 220,000 miles out for a low miles 4.2 out of a 1993 V8 quattro.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Bob Clark

99% sure that A4 trans is not an 01E. I think it's an 01A? Others will know for sure.

You want a 6 speed from a B5 S4. Used they are in the $500-$800 range. Rebuilt with updated shift collars they are $1500 and up.

Or a 6 speed from an 04-05 a4. Also an 01e, but pre-2004 are not 01e

The 01E out of the 3.0 A4 is definitely the best one. Close ratio. Get it!

B6 3.0 had the 01E in MY 2002 and 2003 (maybe not even all of 2003 either). It'll have 01E part numbers on it and an iron/painted back half (the later 01X is all aluminim).
Axles cups are unique, so I don't think the axles will be of use. You'll need to swap out the axle cups with earlier parts (not sure what you need for the V8 specifically).

You have it backwards. 01E is 02-03 3.0L, 01X is 04+ (possibly late 03 also).

Sorry, I was unclear. Referring to the 1.8t only. In that case I'm right. Totally forgot about the 3.0 though, silly NA motor lol

B6 1.8T are not 01E. 5spd are 01A, 6spd are 01X.

YES! The 2002 A4 3.0 V6 6 speed at U Pull It, has a painted black back half on it. with an aluminum gear box. It looks very similar to the 6 speed in my 2004 S4 except for the tail is aluminum with a iron center section. I'll post pics of A4 6 speed tonight after I get it out.

Pretty car. I used to have a pearl 91 v8q on 17" avus wheels when I lived in Chicago. Loved that thing.

Thanks, they are 18 in Avus wheels off my S4. I had a hoarding problem but I'm better now. I had 3 pearl white V8 5 speeds but kept the one with black sport seats. One went to a kid in Council Bluffs, IA, and the other 5 speed went to Scott Nelson, in California he flew in and drove it home.

Is it on stock suspension, and is there any rubbing (even over big bumps)? I might do exactly this. Wheels on the '93 are bent and the stock S4 wheels are just sitting in the garage.

Mine went to a guy in Oklahoma. A couple years later I bought my 200 20v back from him. The 200 20v is WAY faster, but I liked the V8q that most of the 5 Audi's I've owned.

No rubbing, on stock suspension, with stock tires off a 2004 S4. They do look good, but from the front view they tuck in too much and would look much better with spacers to push them out. Still no rubbing though.

The pic shows the car lower than it actually is because I photochopped it to see what it would look like lowered.

front veiw: looks like it could use spacers, but no rubbing as is

Actual ride height, stock suspension, no rubbing:

The V8's have a pretty good amount of room, my winters are 8.0" ET10 F, 8.0" ET15 R with 235s, summers are 9.5" ET30 F, 9.5" ET35 R with 275s (slight rubbing up front)

I got the 01E 6 speed out of the 02 A4 at U Pull it this morning. I took the clutch, flywheel, mount spacer, axles, and shifter too. They charged me $232 including $24 in core charges for the trans and axles.

Now it may be awhile before I get this put into the V8, because I'm waiting for a 4.2 6 speed ECU from the Netherlands to get here by mail.

very interesting read! And love the Avus wheels.

Any update on this project?

...all this to drop top gear rpm a little? It does not seem worth it to me. the 5spd is in there and they are smoother shifting transmissions that do not have a problem taking the tq of the v8. I am sure they have a couple of tweaks that the normal 016 found in the 5cyls do not have.

6th gear totally worth it on long trips.

All that matters is that you want the 6spd. Technically if it is good enough for audi do put it in their car, the 5spd shoud be pretty good. I bet the ones in Germany have hauled down the Autobahn at a higher rate for longer than than the ones in USA.

Agreed, it's not a necessity and it does have a lot of "cool" and "why not" factor to it. But let's also consider that if it weren't useful Audi wouldn't have upgraded the later year v8's to it either.

Would you be able to post the PN for the 4.2 6speed ECU?
