If you use a late block you need a switch to "old chains". New but pre 08 guides/rails/chains.
And the gear that relays cam chain to crank. That needs to be swapped if using late block as well.
Crank gear is diff then late versions.
So oil pump. Relay gear and chais/guids have to match respective crank.

In short, if you're after a forged crank, and find one, get the whole block if the head is good instead of mix and matching.

All this info can be easily found on tpp...

From purely parts diagram/part number research, here are the differing parts between new/old chain setups:
http://rennlist.com/forums/944-turbo-an ... st12153842

I plan on 'backdating' my low mileage late block and installing an early forged crank that I bought on ebay for cheap. BUT, I haven't actually tried this yet.
The old chain setup, so long as you replace it with new parts when you're building the motor should be just fine. Especially if you use good oil and don't follow a 10k mile oil change interval.

Replace the guides and change oil every 3k and it should not be an issue.
Most of the early failures came from VW suggesting a 10k oil change interval, which the timing system was not okay with

Got you! thanks guys! that is all i needed to know before I buy another motor. I guess my question was misunderstood by updating the timing components. I meant you know how Audi (VW in this case) come out with revision after they have a lot of failure on a part, that is what I was wondering. As far as mix matching part from newer block to old block, I don't want to do that

Also looking forward to pics of the alcantara.

What are you doing to the subframe? I seam welded mine, should make a nice bit of difference in addition to the uprated delrin bushings.

I was thinking about swapping parts from 91CQ to the 90CQ

- front cast CA and front strut housing
- front subframe
- rear subframe with sway bar bracket provision and use the 4kQ front sway bar
-custom coilovers (I havent decided on the spring rate yet)
-powewrflex bushings all around

I haven't done much but here is the pictures of the pieces I started along with what I used. I will post a picture tonight of the headliner I think It came out pretty darn good

As far as the dashboard. it seems like if I just cover it with no stitches or anything, It will look dull. So I gotta figure out where I can get the stitches done if I get the line marked.

Dash is gonna be tough without making/stitching pieces together, alcantara isn't the stretchiest stuff around. Look forward to updates!!!
