Morning all,

Car is making quite an odd intake noise when on boost, you can hear the turbo sucking the air in but there's also, what i can only describe as, a crackily noise there. I'm wondering if I've got the timing skewed somehow and its detonation... Anyone ever heard anything similar...?

Thanks

Dave

Check all the rubber in the intake and boost track with a fine tooth comb

Thanks for your replies, I'm half way through replacing all the rubber in the intake & boost track so I should probably just finish that off then we know its all good.

Sorry I shold have said, running Megasuirt 3 with sequential & cop with D585 coils. Turbo is a K26/GT3071 hybrid from 034.

Thanks Dave

It could be detonation. I have actually heard loud det from my 10v running high boost and somehow the engine held together. I could only hear it when rolling onto boost under an overpass or next to a high wall. It is somewhat faint over all the other noises.

Ouch, that doesn't sound good..!

Strange question, I've been thinking about this and rather confused my self.... Is detonation ignighting the fuel/air mix too soon or too late. ie if the timing at set point was, say, 20 deg BTDC and there was detonation, would 18 deg BTDC or 22 deg BTDC be better...? I'm inclined to think the fuel & air is being ignited too early, therefore peak pressure is before the piston is at the top......

Fuel is being ignited too early, either from the spark being triggered too early or pre-ignition (where the mixture spontaneously combusts on its own without the spark, because 10v) 18 degrees of timing is more retarded than 20 degrees BTDC. You could try retarding your timing under boost some and see if the noise goes away. It doesnt really sound to me like you are hearing the detonation though, but it might be worth a try to eliminate the possibility.

Thanks for the replys, just a quick message to close this one off, yes it was detonation... Like an absolute idiot I'd uploaded the wrong timing table DOH...! I can't really complain thol, it forded me to check quite a few things and I also found a boost leak on the wastegate...!
