The other day I was driving for 18 hours straight pretty much and had no issues until 20 min from my house I was stopped at a red light and went off at a reasonable pace and all of a sudden couldnt get it into 5th gear. Just feels like its blocked before the gate. All other gears are perfect even going into reverse and had no issues before.

Car is a 1990 Coupe Quattro with stockish power and drivetrain with Hersh mounts.
I have an extra tranny but not really looking forward to a swap if I dont have to.
Anything I can do/check to solve this

Thanks

Check the linkage. My 80 did the same thing when the linkage moved on the shifter. I recentered everything, and was good to go after that.

How would I go about that? I've checked the shifter as I do have the 034 short shift kit. I just don't know what I am checking for past that. Especially when I can't see anything

What is that, 01A?

The later (anyway, maybe all) 01A have a lockout thing in the box between 5/R. Maybe it's gone bad. I seem to think you can replace it from outside the box

Try fiddling 5 / N / R a bunch parked and see if it jams up. I don't even know if those fail but maybe.

Ya I was thinking that too, tried going back and forth and going through the gears but nothing seems to work, other gears seem to be normal and fluid then as soon as I try to get into 5th, right before the gate, it stops.
and with the 034 kit, it does disable the pushdown for reverse but I don't fully understand how it disables that(thought it was in the gearbox it self)

You probably broke the 5th gear synchro it's common to do so.
