Okay guys,

it's time I started my own project page for my urq.

Basically I bought a 84 Tornado urq several years ago with the intention to do a MC engine swap and freshen the car up a bit. Having lived in Scotland for the first 22 years of my life I'm no stranger to the Audi marque.
Then luckily for me I met Martin Pajak and Mike Hopton, both great guys who between them own 7 urq's!!! and they only live half an hour away from my house. After talking to Martin, I decided that 20vt was the only way to go.
After pulling the engine and interior I discovered that this poor urq had had a hard life. After careful consideration I decided that a complete overhaul was required to bring the car up to the condition that I wanted.

The plan for the engine.

Obtain 20v AAN engine.
Scat connecting rods.
Possibly lower compression to @8.5.1.
Multi layer steel head gasket.
ARP fasteners.
Make custom header.
Modify AAN intake to clear radiator.
Lightweight flywheel from 1990 Audi 200 CNC machined to make lighter.
Heavy duty clutch.
Run Motronic computer and stock K24 turbo before switching to O34 computer.
Custom oil and water lines for turbo.
Install Garrett GT 30 turbo or similar Garrett product.
Big front mount intercooler.
Install Toyota MR2 electric steering pump.
Possibly move engine back 2 inches if drive shafts will let me.
Install bigger oil cooler.

Transmission Plan:

Torsen transmission from 1990 Audi 200 quattro with standard 3:89 gears
Electronic rear diff controller from 93 S4

Misc Plan:

Rear Differential fully rebuilt and powder coated.
Front, Rear sub frames sandblasted and powder coated.
Front and rear control arms sandblasted and powder coated with new bushings installed.
Front and rear struts sandblasted and powder coated with new wheel bearings.
Front and rear drive shafts sandblasted , powder coated and rebuilt.
Aluminium sub frame bushings front and rear.
4000q front sway bar installed on the rear.
Get stock 8 inch royals refurbished.
225/50/15 tyres.

Brake Plan:

Install sport quattro front brake calipers AP Lockheed 4 piston mono-block (thanks Mike.)
Front rotors from Audi A6 2.7tt machined down to 300mm.
Install 93 S4 rear calipers and vented rotors
Stainless steel braided lines.
All new hard brake lines

Suspension Plan:

H&R lowering springs .
Bilstein HD shock absorbers.

The Unibody Plan:

Fix all the problem rust areas.
Install front, rear body strengthening channels as per Audi A2 rally car.
Install rear control arm supports as per Audi A2 rally car.
Make front end removable for ease of engine swap.
Install custom front lower control arm supports as per Audi A2 rally car.
Install custom front engine snub nose mount as per Audi A2 rally car.
Make carbon fibre front sport quattro style grill.
Modify bonnet with sport quattro style vent.

That’s all I can think of now, I’m sure there will be more to come.
Seeing as I have completed @ 80% of the list already I’ll be updating with pictures shortly.

Cheers,

Craig Cook. 8)

Craig,

Great pics and post.

Love the "subframe connector" upgrade.... look at Gringo's URQ sedan project thread for what I think is a great idea for the front rad support area... you had that on your list...

looks like he has a bar that connect the front "frame" horns with tubing, bent low enough to lift motor and trans over...

I have a "cut front" 4000 with 450+hp 20v and front feels really floppy compared to a CQ...

want to do both to my car... right after it moves under it's own power again...

Why is it that your 'trainwreck' urq looks just as good (if not better!) than my daily driver urq?

Arrrrragh! :frustrated:

Frank,

trust me there's hope for you yet. How did you make out with that floor?
Seeing as I haven't been to the last few meetings I haven't spoken to you.

Cheers,

Craig.

Yes,

I know your car well. I love that A2 body kit. If the funds were available
I'd have one of those kits.
I live 5 minutes away from the Sprongl's, I believe they did most of the work on that car.

How is the car coming along?

Cheers,

Craig.

Here are some more pics of the car

The floor is finally finished, seam sealed and undercoated ready for paint.

I added some more braces for strength. I want a strong unibody without the added headache of adding a roll cage.

Rear holes for bumper welded up so I can add my euro bumper.

I also put some vents in my bonnet. Maybe a carbon one will find it's way there one day. :D

Cheers,

Craig Cook.

As soon as I can get access to the body shop I'll take some.
It could be a while though.
Basically I cut part of the bonnet channel out from underside, then I cut the vent hole from the top side. I then hammered and dollied the lip down, made up some vent pieces and welded them in. I then added back the backbone piece, slightly modified and put it all together .
A picture says a thousand words though. :D

cheers,

Craig.

You are fabbin' up a storm! Nice work, what kind of cutting and welding equipment are you using?

I like the "leading arms", have seen them on front of Quattro Rally cars, too...

where is the short tube brace? Have not spent enough time under my cars lately to tell for sure... front wheelhouse?...
