That actually illustrates pretty well what I'm trying to avoid... I'm trying to come up with something that's easy to find, cheap, and still looks halfway decent. I think I've got it, but I just want to have the same widths so that, while it will obviously be custom, it's not going to be sore-thumb obvious.

It sort of follows the rules of racing... Out of Good, Fast, and Cheap you can only have 2..

If it's good and fast it's not cheap.
If it's good and cheap it's not fast.
If it's fast and cheap it's not good.

same thing applies to Women....
Pick 2

Smart
Mentally Stable
Attractive

ok, Im home, I did forget but I will make a good effort to measure them tonight.
Thanks. It's annoying because it takes so little time to measure something like that on a car that usually I can just drive around a Walmart parking lot and find one, but I have zero hope of even seeing a Sport Quattro around here.

Are you looking for measurements from a Real Sport Quattro or one of the after market carbon fiber hoods that are being reproduced as there might be a difference as the real Sport Quattro has a longer front?

I think the grilles are the same. Don't quote me on that. :D I knew about the hood lengths, but figured the details would be the same. Either way it doesn't make a lot of difference to me, I just want a close measurement instead of guessing and coming up with something way off.

I have the Carbon Fiber hood on my Urq
Outside grills are 7.25 wide X 2.25 tall
Center grill is 14.25 X 2.25
the actual hood cut out for the grills is a bit smaller and dont forget they are not straight there is a small arch to them.
Hope this helps

I could also take a photo if you need it?

That's perfect. Thanks! :)

Is the arch you're speaking of looking from the front? It's always hard to tell from pictures, since most are at an angle, plus there are other curves in the hood that lend an optical illusion element, not to mention distortion from the lens...

My hood is the SGI fiberglass hood. It's been mentioned a few different places that the SGI hood was used to pull the mould for the current run of carbon fiber hoods that are out there right now. There is going to be slight differences between the SGI and the Fiber Images hood based on how the individual cuts out the openings. My two outer vents both measure 7 3/8" while the center vent measures a full 15" - all 2 1/4" in height.

At UrQ25 we had three cars lined up next to one another, Dean Treadway's Sport quattro, Rob Dupree's '84 UrQ with sport style hood of unknown origin (help me out here if anyone does know), and my blue car with the SGI hood. The SGI was the most similar to the actual Sport quattro based on the number of vents running up the passenger side and slopes / angles of the rest of the contours, and even a provision for the air intake at the base of the cowl near the windshield. Separate these cars and all three hoods look great and neither of the three looked particularly better than the next - they were just all slightly different.

The reason they are different is because there is a bit of an art in making a Sport quattro replica hood as the hood on the Sport is not the same overall dimensions as the Type 85 cars we all try to put them on. The Sport hood is longer in the front to meet the extended grill that covers the FMIC.

Without digging through ALL of the pics of my car, here is one that offers a good perspective of the curvature of the vents:

Rob Dupree's hood, slightly more angular but looks awesome:

Dean's Sport, best pic I could find in a hurry:

About 7 years ago, at least 10 of us ol' skool UrQ guys got burnt on a group buy for sport quattro replica hoods. We all fronted $150 each for the 'gentleman' to produce the mould and start production of the hoods. He gave lots of excuses for never delivering, and who REALLY knows, but he got as far as showing us all pics of his sample hood. It looked pretty promising too, however he didn't have the slightest clue that it wasn't a direct fit between the Sport and the Type 85. All of the money and time was wasted on a hood that wouldn't fit our cars, he of course fell off the face of the earth after that...

Hope this all helps a bit.

That helps a lot actually. It's nice to see there's quite a bit of variation in them, from the actual size of the vents to how they're arranged. I see on the top car (nice color!), the vents are almost right at the edge, while on the red one they're set back about 5-6" or so. Hard to tell, but the white one almost looks somewhere in between. It's hard to decide which I like better. Closer to the edge does seem to flow more naturally with the lines, but is less like the "real" hoods that I've seen... [Edit: I take that back. It's so hard to tell from Googled images which are real and which are replicas, I could be all messed up. :tard:]

It's also nice to see that I'm not the only one who's having issues finding the grilles (or is too afraid to put them on lest they get lost, damaged, or stolen). I like the mesh, I'd probably go that way before I went totally naked. Of course if they're all different sizes anyway, I can see why some cars have them and some don't.

I'm definitely going to move forward with this, I'm a lot more jazzed knowing that it doesn't have to be precise.

Do any of these hoods have any extra baffling or channels for airflow underneath? Since I'm going all-metal I'm toying with the idea of some different things I could do in that regard. I've even wondered about utilizing the grilles to better get air to an intercooler, depending on where I manage to get one of those stuffed. I guess we'll see when the engine is in and the hood is at least mocked up.

Thanks again.
