Im about to replace the timing chain tensioner on my A4. Its making a shitty sound after the engine warms up. Ive read that i can just remove one cam and slide in the new tensioner but by by doing it this way,can i replace the chain too? Or do i have to remove both cams?? Should i bother with the chain or just do the tensioner??

i just got the tensioner in the mail TODAY to do this same thing for my wifes Jetta. and hers is doing the same death rattle after it warms up. had it towed 107 miles back home last week as i couldnt diagnose over the phone.

i have done this before, leave the chain i do/did.

takes about 30 minutes or so. do NOT pull the exhaust cam up, or you will be doing the timing belt stuff like possibly putting the belt tensioner back in to put a pin in it and retime the whole thing. i pull the intake cam up, mark a single tooth and one roller on the chain, and weasel the tensioner out of there. clean up and re-goop the new gasket you need, and then wiggle the tensioner back in. bolt down intake cam verifying that its still in the proper place, and close her up, doctor.

Hmm ok looks like ill return the chain unless i can see if its really worn out.

and done. and no you cannot change the chain without pulling the exhaust cam.

about an hour and fifteen, i forgot to put the cam covers back on the first time, and saw them when i was about done LOL.

fixed the issue perfectly.

one thing i did get was really lucky. a couple of the bolts didnt feel like they were coming up to torque, and one in the tensioner actually broke. but since i was going slow enough, i was able to pull it back out and it was about 85% broken thru just barely hanging on. pulled another and it was stretching. so i replaced those two and good to go. i am going to check them in a little while just to be sure.

Yup,i really started sweating when i realized that one set of cam lobes are pressing onto 3 lifters and didnt know how to get the cam in place while bolting it down. So i started slowly screwing in cam cap bolts until the lobes pressed on the lifters and the cam centered itself. I had 2 cam cap bolts not want to reach 7lt lbs too! WTF so 2 of them were torqued to 6ft. lbs. Anyways, the car is turn key but only time will tell if i effed it up. Wish Audi wouldve made the valvetrain bolts a bit more robust.
Noticed the plastic chain guides were worn and made that shitty noise after warm up. Hope that solves it. If not,Bentley manual suggests to replace the one way oil pressure valve for the cylinder head. Not enuf oil pressure to valvetrain can make the shiity noise too but i went after the most common failure, which is the tensioner.
