Audi V8 in a Boxster

Looking at Hilly's V8 Lotus has me thinking of a similar conversion for my 99 Porsche Boxster. I have a 5 speed tranny which I believe is also used on Audi's. Intial look from some of the Boxster tuners they think the Audi V8 will fit in the engine bay. I know there is a LS1 conversion in the works, but I really want a German V8 in my car if I do this.

Question has anyone tried to hook up an Audi V8 to either a 5 speed or 6 speed Boxster transmision for a mid engine kit car? In looking at pictures of the Audi V8 it appears that maybe starter is in wrong place?

What do you do for engine managment with the Audi V8? Is this a very difficult task for a competent mechanic?

I'm coming from 914 world where we do engine conversions all the time. Boxster and V8 sounds like a very fun conversion but I'm unsure if this is going to work with Boxster transmission. With 914 we have kits to hook up everything from Subaru motors , to SBC V8's to 6 cyclinder Porsche motors. It would be a blast to have a V8 Boxster! Appreciate any input.

I have A FWD 95 90 5 speed and it does look very similar. i recall a previous conversation with an extremely knowledgable porsche/audi fanatic and he was telling me older porsches at least, ( i cant recall which model) basicly uses a fwd audi 5 speed obvioulsy in the rear.

Your talking ALOT of body work as the V8 engine is quite a bit taller than the engine in the boxster. You'd loose quite a bit of trunk space, and there would possibly be some intrusion into the passenger compartment.

The Boxster uses a 5 speed very closely related to the 012. The Boxster S 6 speed is of the 0A2 variety.
Boxster motor has big tall intake and a bunch of systems on top of the motor. Audi V8 intake nestles down in between heads. I dont think it would be too tall, but with measurements I will start to learn what will need to be done. There is already a big hole over the top of the stock engine compartment with a removable cover. Tis is located under the convertible top. Firewall also already has a cut out as well with a plate that bolts over the area. I dont have a convertible top anymore. Car has a hard top. So if it was just a matter of making square just a little bigger I dont know if that would be too much sheetmetal work. I dont think its much longer lenght wise. Trunk is way in back of car over the tranny so dont think I'd lose any trunk space.

Porsche 914 guys shove Chevy V8's in their little mid engine cars all the time with no or very little sheetmetal mods.

Somone is doing a SBC conversion on a Boxster now. I will be getting lots of info from that build.

Here's a picture of my current car. You can see hole on top and plate in front.

I'm gathering information for somone who will likely do one first. I will learn from mistakes and build mine after this.

I still havent found anyone who has hooked up an Audi V8 to a Boxster 5 speed. I'm getting the demensions of the engine bay soon to determine how much cutting if any will be required.

Yes I do :) and I'll be ordering parts from 034 early next week for a VR6 engine in front of a BoxsterS 6speed. It helps that I have an Audi head honcho as a good friend :)

The Audi V8 is of GREAT interest to me. I love the design and the different versions!

My Boxster mockup tub arrives next week. It is crunched in the front, but everything from the A pillars back is good!

The engine "bay" you see in the pics Grant posted above can be moved up 6+ inches before it would interfere with the convertible top. I measured the 996 engine (popular conversion choice for Boxster people) at 16inches high and it fits no problem. It *sounds* like the V8 will need some room from the numbers I have see posted above. We have plenty of room length wise and side to side in the engine bay.

This is the V8 I'm looking at right now. It is in an S4 convertable here in SoCal. I can pick it up for 3k.

screw that man, drive the crap out of it. Thats what its made for. If you give them a hard time, Porsche will make good with something like that. They don't want people going around spreading bad things.
Lol. There is a great deal of stuff on the internet where people had their motors fail and Porsche wouldn't do anything for them. Google it if you want to find it. There are pages where people who this has happened to have posted a compilation of bad experiences.

I was surprised to read in this thread that Porsche made good on the bad motor. From what I read online, buying a Boxster out of warranty is super risky.

Eh....fire + plastic valve covers = $1000 list price fix. No thanks.

Find another engine that hasn't been in a fire.

You cannot see the engine in a Boxster easily, so cosmetics doesn't mean a lot to me. If we could "easily" pop a hood like you guy's... we'd have more cool stuff for the cars :)

Looks like the tub will be here Friday.. and now I have TWO tubs coming my way "great" Luckily I have a long RV pad next to the house.

It wasn't a comment on cosmetics as much as it was on avoiding a potential pain in the ass. If the valve covers are warped they wont seal properly. I'm not kidding that they list for over $500 each. They're silver painted plastic which I've seen melt and warp from heat. I've seen a coil failure require a new valve cover. Unlike 1.8T engines (I've got four spare valve covers for those) 079 V8 engine valve covers are less common and could be harder to track down. If you're okay with all of that then by all means proceed.

Interesting idea (V8 in a boxster). I like it.

My ABZ is 20.63 inches from bellhousing interface (rear of block, not including crank flange or flywheel, or seal housing) to the crank pulley.

Overall width is 29 inches but this does not include the exhaust manifolds. THis is valve cover to valve cover.

Not sure on the height. I will have to measure it. I will probably take photos in 3 views and show dimensions in the photos.

BTW, want to buy it from me ? :-D

I think the Audi V8 and Porsche V8 are basically the same motor but there arent many people I know of doing Porsche V8 conversions. Mostly Audi V8's.
The Porsche V8 and Audi are not related in any respect to design.

Most people are using Audi V8 engines because they are cheap.

GOT IT! Thanks for the heads up. The fire in this car started in the passenger compartment behind the center console. The "yard" who has it, has a lot of them. I'll be sure to ask for replacements if these don't seal.

I'd also be very weary of a fire motor regardless where the fire originated. The V8 uses thin wall castings that can't take much heat.

Also the Chain drive V8's aren't the best to go with, I'd look into earlier (and cheaper) cam belt models.

The wife would kill me if I suggest another project, however an LS7 or LS9 in a boxter would be a blast.
