Well got a call last night from my dad about this. My mom has a 96 A4 quattro V6, I honestly don't know much about the B5, so couldn't really help him.

He said that while driving the tach, and speedo would just stop working and drop to zero. Then without doing anything, the would jump back to life and seem to function properly. I had taken notice that the temp gauge would do this from time to time when I drove it to carlisle for the show.

My question is, what could be causing this to happen. My first thought is that the cluster might be F'ed up, but then I started thinking a little harder, thought that maybe there is a sensor(or multiple) that could be the problem. there is no CEL, so pulling codes wouldnt be a help. Any help would be awesome, as they really need this car to hold up for a while yet.

You might get some codes from the cluster itself. They wouldn't give a CEL.
