Clutch Pedal Disappearing Act

Hello im Frank. I have a 1990 90 quattro with the 20 valve motor. I was driving and when I shifted into second and let go of the clutch, the pedal retracted to the floor. clutch pedal now does nothing. does anyone know what could have happened?

Slave cylinder went out most likely.

Either that or the clutch pedal itself broke.

Or the line between the master and the slave broke. They can get pretty corroded.

Slave first, line 2nd, master 3rd (but only if you get fluid on your feet, BTDT!).

My master cylinder failed, which caused the pedal to barely come off the ground. It wasn't leaking any fluid, but when it was removed from the car I found it was easy to compress (no resistance). It felt really sloppy.

Wow, I didnt expect help so fast! Thanks. Ive done a slave on my wife's accord, is the slave on the 20valve easy to get to, or would i have to drop the tranny or something?

You don't have to drop the tranny, but it's a PITA to get at.

Check the master cylinder rod too. Had a clevis pin failure once that resulted in the master rod snapping in half and the pedal assembly needing replacement too. Thats a rare occurance, but of course you never know.

Sounds like its time for a new slave and master.
