Hmm interesting...

Is the engine bolted directly to the belhousing or is there an adaptor plate in there? (it looks like there is in the pic of the starter)

How different is the V8 bolt pattern to the I5? Is there any chance it would bolt up...? :?

Ah right. So they definitely are different then.

There are a couple of 924 Turbos on fleabay so I will have to try and get one of those

Presumably the 924 bellhousing fits on to the 944 torque tube?

Ok I'm reading this thread, and on the first page is this:

A Volvo bellhousing that fits an I5? Is that from one of the 700 series that used the Audi I5 diesel? Does anyone have any idea which models and years used that setup and what transmission the Volvo used?

Ah thanks :) Looks like the 760 was only offered as an auto then, hence the size of that bellhousing, and obviously why he chose to mate it to the Supra transmission

Its not really relevant to anything I'm doing at the moment, but useful to file away for future reference

No I think there is only one type of bellhousing per drivetrain style.

944 and 924s (top diagram) share one sort of bellhousing, which isn't even close to the Audi pattern (I've tried).

924 Turbo (931) has a completely different one which apparently does fit the Audi pattern with a little ingenuity (not tried yet).

I'll be picking up a 924 Turbo drivetrain in a couple of weeks so I'll post up what I find

The bellhousings can apparently be swapped between torque tubes though.

Thanks  Very helpful to see that all in one place.

Getting hold of a 931 bellhousing in the UK is unreasonably difficult though :x

I found one complete car but the guy won't take it apart because it's not worth his time for the parts I want :frustrated: I may try and take it apart myself instead.

I have found the 2.7T spacer though so that is a start.

This is so frustrating! You have given me the info I need to build it, but I can't find the parts :curses:

Well I just received what is alleged to be a 924 turbo bellhousing and its not even close to fitting :curses:

What I was expecting:

What I have:

Not even close. It looks exactly like the 944 unit, and even has a 944 part number :frustrated:

I'm really quite :x now. Thats ÂŁ80 down the drain that I really can't afford to lose.

Reason I'm so interested is I've been having vivid nightmares about splicing a 944 pan (firewall rearward) into a Corrado shell, and installing an Audi V8

I've been told the 924/944 front suspension and steering will bolt into Corrado Strut towers... Corrado is 75mm - 4" +/- longer Wheelbase so the V8 should sit well back in the Chassis...
The splicing is an awful lot of work. I'm planning on installing a B3/4 front subframe in the rear to hold the trans and wishbones, and connecting it to the motor with the 944 torque tube. I'm hoping with some cunning fabrication I can do it all without significant structural welding on the shell. There will be cutting, and cosmetics, but hopefully not much structural work.

The 944 front suspension isn't even close to bolting up to a Corrado though. The layout is completely different, with the steering rack in front of the axle line rather than behind it in the 'rado. Subframe, etc are completely different.

Although the wheelbase is pretty close the layout of the two cars is very different, with the motor sitting much further back in the 944 than is possible in the 'rado. The torque tube needs extending by about 18" to connect everything up.

I just need to find the subframe and I can start mocking up. I'll make a build thread when I do :)

Corrado!

The problem I see with using the 944 floorpan is the firewall is much further forward in the Corrado, so you would have to lengthen it by much more than 75mm and change the proportions quite a bit. Thats why I mentioned having to extend the torque tube by 12-18"

If you compare where the engine is relative to the suspension struts and firewall is between the pic above and this one you will see what I mean:

Well the syncro stuff will bolt up to a Corrado, but you can't fit a 944 (or Audi) transmission to it. Its designed for a very small diff which hangs under a large crossmember so theres no space. Very similar to the Quantum Syncro actually.

You can't fit the syncro beam without cutting the floor out of the Corrado. The wheel well has to go to clear the beam and diff, and a crossmember which is NLA must be fitted to support the beam. You pretty much have to buy an entire Syncro Golf and cut it up to get the parts, and the geometry on the syncro beam is pretty poor at anything other than stock ride height.

Fitting a B3 front subframe to the rear of the Corrado is (IMO) an easier and better way of supporting the transaxle and suspension than trying to mod a syncro beam to support the transaxle. With the sort of power I'll be putting through this thing I think I'd rather have proper wishbones with decent geometry rather than the syncro trailing arms

It will all make more sense when I can get hold of the few parts I'm mssing and can start mocking things up :)

Clutch plate is one off an Audi 2.8 V6. Has the same outside diameter as the stock 7A plate but fits the 944 transaxle.
Just to clarify this - are there several different sizes of input shafts on Audi transmissions? I took the clutch off my V6 TDI today, which has an 01E, but the spline is too small to fit the 944 torque tube.

Also checking at the other end the coupler from the 944 torque tube appears to be too large for the 012 which I'm using at the rear.

This sort of implies that the 2.8 V8 gasser has a larger input shaft than everything else, including the V6 TDI (which has more torque!). Can anyone confirm that please?
