the only problem is it blew the timing belt. Ive had cars before that I bought with blown timing belts, some needed no other parts (non-interference motors) and some needed a whole heap of parts, including pistons. others just needed valves.

the owner wants $2000 for the car and its CLEAN. green outside, white leather inside. 5spd obviously.

My question is how strong are audi pistons? Im pretty sure the valves will be toast and I can deal with that, but I really would not want to dig into the bottom end.

I think you have a very good chance of having a good bottom end. Might be helpful to find out what kind of rpm the car was running when the belt snapped. If it was banging off the rev limiter, you might have a problem. I have a set of 3b pistons that I am going to use that contacted a valve, and you can barely see just a tiny little mark where the valve hit. The valve was pretty well mushed.

Depends on the rpms when it let go in my estimation as to whether the pistons are going to be bad. I have had multiple audi T/B breaks and I've yet had to replace the pistons. I've had it where they are barely nicked and others that let go at speed that had pretty good indents, but nothing that I haven't been able to clean up and polish in the block.

:stupid: i might add that 2k seems a bit high, unless is REALLY clean inside and out and the chassis is all well maintained. I got my s6 for 2500 running and driving, and I got my urs4 for $500, running but needing some work. I would offer maybe 1500 unless its a really nice example. The urs cars are very nice cars, but the engine are by far their most valuable part.

I am thinking of offering the person $1000, actually. I dont think they know how much work is involved for a car with a blown timing belt. they list the book price as being between $3000 and $3500 in far to good condition, yet they say that the engine RUNS fine, but it jsut blew a timing belt. kind of like "Oh, thats all thats wrong with it?" riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

another thing, will VW 16V valves fit in the head? If I pick this up for $1000, I could make a GRM car out of it with a bigger turbo and a bit of suspension work!

Couple other possibilities: owner could have confused "timing belt" with serpentine belt in which case it's probably fine.

Or, maybe the timing belt went but it's been fixed? If it's got new valves, HG, etc. it could be a deal!

the engine wont run without the timing belt intact... sounds like you need to do some more digging.

2 possibilities.

1. the owner thinks the timing belt is just like every other belt. he doesnt know that when it goes, so do the valves and maybe even pistons. necessitating what is probably at least an easy $2000 fix. (the fix isnt easy, getting the labor and parts up to a $2000 bill is tho.)

or

2. As Elaw pointed out, he might have the serpentine belt coinfused with the timing belt, in which case, its a steal at $2000.

$2000 for an S6? Cripes, that is cheap compared to Europe or Thailand.

In case the timing belt went, probably just the valves and possibly the guides that need to be replaced.

If it's the serpentine belt that failed, make sure it didn't take anything with it. There have been multiple cases of the serp belt failing and taking out the timing belt on these cars- not good.

How many miles on the car?
