If those front 'halfshafts' don't work out, I was looking under the business end of a 993 with a DIY turbo conversion that nuked a tranny last weekend, while looking for the front diff and drivetrain (learned the car started as a normal 993 after this), I saw there was some sort of nice bolt/washer/nut system keeping the hubs and bearings happy.

Yeah, you could prob chop the Joint off leaving only the stub end and get rid of some rotational mass. I guess it would also be nice to get rid of the front outputs in the transmission and you could move it back if you felt like cutting the firewall :D How close is the bolt pattern to a VW TDI? There is a place making an adapter for VW TDI to Toyota transmissions.

you wouldn't have to cut the firewall... just lower the engine and tranny to fit under the steering rack. but it's a whole ton of work involved i bet, messing with the exhuast mounting, oil pan and all that.

Which is fine, if you don't want to keep ABS working ;)

I was thinking of modding my spare 01A by removing the front diff, blocking off the L & R outputs... then eliminating the torsen. I was considering this while watching a tech at work rebuild an 01A gearbox. I've had discussions with that tech about him wanting to swap a RWD driveline with a small block chevy into a B5 A4 quattro. Thing is... he's the sort of guy that will do it, his last project was a rather absurd wrangler. He's just waiting for the right customer to sell him their sludged up 1.8T A4 for a gran or two.

Yeah, certainly doable, I wanted something I could make AWD'able again in an hour or so, which I can do with this as I modded a spare tailshaft housing. Just bolt everything back in and go 8)

Dont you kinda need the outter joints in place to prevent the wheel bearings from separating and sorta letting the wheels fall off. IIRc that bolt going through the hub and into the outter CV keeps everybody from breaking apart like a family on jerry springer.

Yea, Hence the stock CV option, or a big ole 'washer' and bolt to keep things clamped. Either way works, you'll need the tone wheel on the CV though if you've got and want to retain ABS functionality.

yeah unless you've got an A chassis like a TT... they have the rings on the hubs... of course thats why you need a special tool to change the wheel bearings.

Damn, I need to move to Cali...or Doug Tompsett needs to move to Squamish. Either way, I need to be closer to the crazies :p

Nate, if you ever swap back to AWD...let me know and I'll take your welded diff off your hands ;)

Still haven't got Dumbo's ears...apparently customs is backed up three weeks right now!?!

What??! Next thing you know there'll be some border patrol van cruising around with some trick air scoops on the hood :x

Wine Country!?! Why haven't you told me this before!?! Hmmm...it's still about an hour and a half from 034 given good traffic (and is there EVER 'good' traffic in Cali?).

I think you're just going to have to do Squamish Doug.

Nate - No ears, but the post office ladies all know me by name right now...so they are going to call me when they arrive!
