New lifters, still ticking

How old is the engine? Does it have a high pressure engine driven pump? If so check that out.

I have no idea why my response, which should have been the 9th post, is now the first. Weird...

I have this beater 1.6td ecodiesel jetta. It started ticking in the middle of a 3000 mile roadtrip, sounded like a lifter or maybe a rod bearing. Quite hard to pinpoint a noise on an IDI diesel. I opened up the bottom and looked it over, replaced rod bearings for good measure. Still ticked. I put in new lifters last night and it still ticks, but it really does sounds like a lifter. I soaked them for maybe 2 hours before install, maybe this was too short? I have driven it about 50 miles since and the noise has not gotten any better. Is there a chance it just takes a long time for air to bleed out of new lifters, should i remove and soak them longer? or just give up and run it until something ejects from some part of the engine castings?
These appear to be the exact same INA lifters that audi 5 bangers use.

very good to the eye. nothing looked out of place in there.
Cracked exhaust manifold?

i have checked it pretty carefully, but im not ruling it out.
The strange thing is, when the new lifters were installed it was quiet like it should be for a minute or two, then started getting louder again :x

I usually use a bit of hose up to my ear for a stethoscope to find things like a manifold leak, however, this motor is so damn clattery its really hard to isolate what noise is what.
What oil are you using?
15w-40 rotella dino
Maybe run it till warm, then check lifters. (just in case) push on them with a piece of wood to test for softness.

wow magic.

it has a regular gear oil pump (sub 100 psi) that is similar or the same as the gas 8v engines. I actually had it out once and checked the clearances and it seemed just fine to me. I ordered an oil pressure gauge as a next step.
