Tholey's Project PxTx 20vt AAN 4000 .:RUNS:. !!!!

I believe it is good netiquette to start a thread with pics, so here is my 4kq 20vt conversion as it sits right now.

I am requesting pics of the Power Steering hose off other Audi cars. Hopefully something like an 80/90 would have a strait pressure hose which threads into the rack line and has a strait banjo where it attached to the pump.

I am struggling with this since I have adapted an AAN to the car. The custom PS line is becoming an obstacle. Any thoughts or ideas?

Go electric! I can't tell you how nice it is to be able to stick your arm into the engine bay where the PS pump used to be.

I agree. This is one of the many mods I have on my list to do, but that PS pump was major pain when installing the new water line.

BTW, I want an 034 intake manifold. *sniff, sniff* Looks hawt!
I decided to keep the PS pump since it made retaining the serp belt easy. I thought it was going to be easy to have a PS hose made. I really wish I could go electric, but with the serp belt config it didn't make sense. Especially with all of the items on the same plane there is just a little more room for the intercooler.
just get a shorter belt or make a small idler pulley somewhere to keep the belt in line.

I've done this a few times, just measure it out with a string and go to NAPA and get the right length belt.
I did look at this option, but when I tried to route the belt w/o the PS pump and keep AC, I just couldn't figure out a way to keep the rotation right and keep the belt from interfering with other pulleys. Sometimes I feel really dumb around this Audi stuff, just can't seem to wrap my brain around it. Since the PS is so high, removing it drops the belt routing. I guess i could just take the pistons out of the pump and get an electric.

With all that to consider, am I really better off redoing what I've done and going electric? I mean if all I need is a hose, it would seem like the e/pump should be a last resort. I'm no longer on a timeline since I missed the Watkins Glen event.

At this point, a hose is pretty trivial... 8)
Common guys, I showed you mine.

Nobody is gonna show me theirs? Powersteering lines that is.
if you need something custom made up, go to a hose shop. My local Napa also does hydraulic stuff. I'll be using them for the new lines to my electric power steering pump, $75 for the complete hose made from scratch. All I did was bring in both ends that I needed (the socket on the pump and the stock hose connection for the tube that comes off the rack) and they were able to quote me a price.
Here is a little update. I went to have an end put on the stock 4k hose and because it is uncommon the hydraulic places AND Napa couldn't help. I did buy and american made Napa hose which used common sized hose. I then had Napa use a couple to add it to my 4kq hose. It is kinda a bastard hose, but it might work.

Here is a few other items for the car. One of them I did not aquire at my favorite booth at Waterfest. Cany anyone tell which one it is. Even harder yet to tell exactally what it does.

The fuel rail.
or the throttle body adapter...
Kinda a trick question. I took the TB adaptor and welded my own adaptor to it. I can now fit the 034 HO intake on my motor and utilize a GM LS1 throttle body. No more powersteering pump interference! Since the AAN tb would not ift with the AAN pump and I need to make a spacer i figured it would be worth it to change to a tb which offers better idle control as well as many option for real oversized tbs.

Wadaya think?

Looks awesome Paul, way to make the solution work 8)
Now that the TB does not hit anything, I tried dunking the radiator in. I ran into some problems as the the AAN oil pan and A/C compressor seem to b in the way.

I would like to avoid angling the radiator as i think it greatly reduces it's effectiveness and its kind of a hack solution. I will need the car to run cool in the track and I think a properly oriented radiator will help.

What have others done to avoid this dilema? I guess my options are to swap in a different oil pan or to move the rariator over to the side a little. The only thing preventing this is the frame rail. I think it would be fine if I narrowed the rail and then reenforced it. Too hacky? I don't really see a down side of the rail mod if I can do it nicely and then paint it.

angling the radiator a little bit will be ok. On my 4ktq even after modifying the AAN intake I still needed a little extra clearance which I gained by tipping the radiator to the side and 'out' at the bottom a little bit. It still stands pretty much straight up and down. Looking at the pics I bet this would give you the clearance you need for the AC compressor.

The solution is to use a 7A oil pan. For the AC, most people obviously ditch it, or you might be able to convert the AAN back to a V belt setup like the 3B uses, althought AC compressor still might be tight in there. I've never BTDT.
Jeeze this is kinda embarassing, but my Car has been removed from it's second shop due to lack of progress and is now at the third and final place.

Now, I beleive the first shop had swaped in the AAN motor using the AAN engine brackets. Does anyone have an opinion on how well they match the original 4kq mounts? It seem the radiator may come into contact with the mounts.

For the record, I am hoping to have about 120hrs left in getting this car up and running. Heck, the last shop had promised I'd be ready for the Watkins Glen event in August '06. We'll see.
