I thought the TDC sens. read the pin and the RPM sens. read the teeth? Is the car off when you get the RPM code? I have heard that it will give a RPM sens. faulty code when off, even if they are good, if that is true or makes any sense, I don't know :wtf: .

And oh ya, isn't there a hall snsor in the ign. dist.? IIRC mine had that with the little 3 pin plug dealie thats sometimes break and/or the wires break and come loose (on 5 cyls). Would that cause it to not rev like that?

Also I've heard some of the 16v vw's have a seal in the ign. dist. that fails and lets oil in.

*EDIT* sorry, I didn't see this second page...

I may have one of those ring gears if Marc doesn't. I'll have a look tomorrow.
I did, till I chucked it last week :(

Not as yet, managed to sell my dirt bike yesterday so had to take it for a spin last night before handing it over to the new owner.

Probably wont get to it until this weekend at this rate.

I just looked for that ring gear for a while, damnit I couldn't find it! I'm 99.98% sure I have it, just not sure where! :frustrated: . Didn't help that my light died on me, but I know my way around the barn pretty well :p . I'll take another look in the daylight tomorrow see if I can catch it...

OK so somebody let me in on the secret.... how the hell do I get the starter out of this thing without taking the engine out :)

Seems if I remove the big Allen head bolt from the bottom of the starter it is still retained by another bolt at the top that appears to be inside the bell-housing, or am I missing something.

I gotta get some manuals that's for sure.

H

{EDIT} OK so I found this post from Ron over on Audifans, http://www.audifans.com/twiki/bin/view/ ... eplacement which makes some sense as I just could not see or feel any bolt anywhere in there form above or below. Removal of the airfiler would definitely help.

Haydn, The pic below is the back of the motor..at the 3o'clock possition is the starter hole. You can see the tranny mount rite behind it...well you can obviousley see the 2 threaded hols for the bolts.
http://www.motorgeek.com/phpBB2/v/Ronal ... 4.jpg.html

Well as I stated on the audifans it's easier to get at it from the top. But the manual says to get at it from under the pass side wheel whell. I found it easier from the top. Allso
for refrence...follow the diff vent hose thats attatched to the firewall down to the top of the tranny & it's rite there. You'll know you have it cause the bolt is like 8 inches long!!

You maynot have to take the dizzy cap/ignition wires/rotor off..but it made it easier for me..it maynot for you,
you maybe able to have enough room but I found it was less clomsy to just take the pass side dizzy off. Taking the air intake off the pass side will give you enough open area to get to the bolt. Oh
& have FUN :)

Hey Ron,

:thanks:

Thanks for the image it helps a lot. I was assuming last night while trying to get the thing out that the sadistic design engineers at Audi intended you to get to it via the wheelwell as they tend to do that a lot, however the only bolt head I could find seemed to be way to high up.

I see in your picture (thanks) where it is now and am assuming it is way back on the bellhousing (hence the 8" long) and threads into the starter given teh engine mount precludes it coming from teh front side.

I'll have another go tonight and take pics while I am at it......all this to find out if I have to pull the motor that I have to pull anyway :) I guess I just want to confirm the motor runs cleanly before I go any further.

Good job I am picking another one up this weekend :woowoo:

Hey Ron,

:thanks:
Ehhhh no problem. But be clear that the top bolt is on the back of the tranny facing forward & the lower is obviously in the front facing to the rear. Still
when I've had the pleasure of replacing the starter on the V8 I've been able to see/feel around for the top bolt by looking at the starter as well for reference. Another words
while leaned over the pass side fender I'm able to feel around for the bolt & see the starter enabling me to gage were the top bolt will be.

No problem on not finding it and thanks for looking, If I do find tooth issues and have to pull the motor I will be doing a conversion from Auto to 6sp at that time anyway so I will need one of those fancy 034 Al flywheels :)

Yes $300 for the flywheel, they are almost $500 new...unless you'd like to try daily driving that heavy assed car with an aluminum flywheel...which I dont recommend.
Thats what Keith said to me above^^^!
