I'll add to what DE80q said... there is a definite difference in how well you can see a weld puddle between the good helmets and the cheap ones. I started off with a fixed shade helmet (wayyyyy back), then a couple different HF autodarkening helmets, and a couple years back bought a Lincoln Viking 3350 4C. Absolutely no comparison... the Lincoln just makes welding easier because you can see that much better. I'd say you probably can't go wrong with a good Lincoln, Miller, Optrel, or 3M Speedglass helmet. All more to the expensive side, but worth it IMO.
