Most of the early VWs used front pull brake cables. Until you get to the late MKIII or MKIV, all the calipers are for a smaller rotor than the original coupe. Even the early MKIVs, were only barely larger than the stock coupe rear 245X10mm rotors. So unless whoever told you, could be more specific, then they are basically one of these:taxi615 said:
