White smoke ...crap!

Hey

A while ago I rebuilt the top end of my engine (head only), which is a NF 2.3 L from an Audi 87 5000S Quattro. After the head was rebuilt I drove the car for about a month with no issues. Then the car was involved in an accident which forced me to change the transmission and a bunch of other parts… :). I drove the car, however it was not road legal as the hood wouldn't shut and the headlight was smashed in etc. At this point I decided to rebuild the short block of the engine, so I had new bearings and piston rings, and seals installed. I put the short block back in the car, and installed the engine head with the same procedure as before. Great it runs. . . . However the exhaust is white! I think this is coolant but it doesn't smell like anything sweet, just sort of a nasty smell. Anyways I let the engine run for a good 30 min (can't drive car *yet*, and the weather here is +25 so its not a case of not warmed up), but I let it idle and rev'd it to around 2000 every now and then. On idle its not too bad, but it makes a noticeable cloud around the back of the car, at 2000 rpm, you may as well have a smoke machine there.

So in summary, new top end new bottom end, new rings, new head gasket…and then this :(

Does anyone think that there is something that could have been done in the process while the short block was rebuild that would cause coolant to leak into the cyl. walls? … or is it perhaps just a bad head gasket ?

One difference in the head this time is when I reinstalled the same head I was using before I swapped in a Blau sport 272 cam shaft, but Ive read and see that many people are using these /w this engine without the smoke machine effect… Think it would be somehow causing it?

I'm just trying to get as much input as I can to see what I should do next. I have some things I'm going to try on Friday most likely, and see from there, but Id like to know what you guys think also….

Thanks,

Jonathan

You used new head bolts and gasket, right?

Sounds like you might have a HG leak as you say. Pull the plugs and see if you can confirm it with an odd looking plug.

Hey

Oh yea NEW *everything* was used, bolts, gaskets for sure. Ever happen that you get a defective HG ?

What do I look for on the plugs ? Green tinge?

Can i dis connect fuel and crank for a bit, remove plugs and see /w a cuetip if there is green stuff on top of cyl ? or would there not be enough there to see?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hey,

Checked the plugs, no evidence of green tinge, oil or anything, their all clean. nothing comes out except for fuel on a crank. Going to drain a little more oil and see if green comes out at the start, as if its just running down inside the engine. Atleast oil sits ontop of glycol when its not mixed :)

Any other ideas to check?

Thanks,

Jonathan

I'm thinking it could be a slight HG leak and the it only appears when up to temp.

When rebuilding the head how bad were the cracks between the valves and seats?

If you have a fiber optic light that you can put on a maglite pull the plugs after running and look for moisture differences.

I just went through the same thing after a rebuild. I overheated my head and it was easy to find the 2cm of water in number 2. :(

You may find nothing in the oil if it's a slight leak. For now that is...

Hey

thanks for the reply, Ill get some pics uptoday.

... When the head was rebuilt ... I drove it for 4000 km ok no problem.... the old valves didn't look that bad and the seats had a little carbon :S

How exactly does the fibre optic light help or are you using that just to look inside the cyl ?

How did you overheat your head after a rebuilt ? Bad pump or :S ?

Thanks

Hey

Ive got some pics up here showing the plugs. Also some videos. I drove it today for a while and it stopped smoking A LOT... which is good, but im still not convinced. Reving the engine in neutral to 3K-4K-> no smoke. Driving under power, a little puff every now and then (not always though?!), and also decel (no shift or bip in throttle), just go 40 in 2nd and coast slowly to 10 km/hr, and a small puff every now and then. It looks white to me... but im still not sure whether I should leave it or pull the HG? If anyone has the patience, download the videos and let me know what you think! Their hosted on my box here with a max up of 80 kb /sec so if its slow give it a few minutes then try again

I used the fiber optic light to look down in the cylinders easier. If the problem is a faint as you're showing in the videos then it may be hard to see the small amounts of seepage.

It's hard to tell from the video what the problem may be.

The unfortunate reason for my forced second rebuild after 5,000mi was my boneheaded move of not replacing my upper radiator hose and then blowing it and trying to drive further than I should have. Once getting to water I pulled a dumb-ass move of putting cold water into the motor and then shortly thereafter turning the engine off... Immediate warp-age.

I'm running and MC2 motor and on this rebuild used a S4 20v gasket.

The reason that I rebuilt it the first time is that I had coolant leakage into the cylinder. Upon inspection of the HG it had been seeping off and on for quite some time.

Hey

Im thinking im going to leave it and drive it for a bit. Get the rest of the car together and then after i get some km's on it ill have an idea then. Doesn't appear to be any in the oil etc. So with a little luck it might have just needed to blow off a little steam :) I think that the white puffs that come only after a hard accel are from unburned gas hitting the CAT, or maybe too much fuel after I let off the throttle, ill check the plate. Also my plugs aren't the cleaned, and if i'd have been thinking I would have cleaned them first :)

Wow, im sorry to hear that happened. I had my rad blow and *just* as I was about to pour in room temp water I was able to stop my self. But I know it can be easy to do :S

How is the MC2 motor ? I have an MC1 ive been toyin with putting in, but with all the associated issues, I think id like to install it in a 2nd car as a toy instead of my daily driver....

Cheers
