Since it's been officially 'outed' by eurotuner in the latest magazine, it's time for us to pull the veil off of our latest track project. We concocted a plan after last years GP that sort of turned the VR6 A4 project on it's head. This time we're going to be running a (primarily) Audi power plant in the VW. We'll be shoehorning a 2.7tt into the golf... We've cut away the rear floor pan and grafted in a complete 996 Turbo rear subframe and suspension assembly. In this new cradle we're inserting a big single turbo 3.0l v6 twin turbo motor attached to a FWD version of the 01E transmission. To fit all this, and provide the traction we've needed we also sectioned and widened the golfs rear flanks by ~4" per side in the rear, and the front will likely bulge out another 2" or so when we're done. Now, for what you all want : The first big milestone, initial test fitment of the running gear: Amazingly.. it all bolts up!? As if it was meant to live there the diff spacing, axle bolts, everything lines up exactly how we needed. This is a complete 996 turbo rear assembly, including axles, with a bone stock 01E slid in there attached to our mockup 2.7 motor. You'll notice this is a standard quattro 01E setup, we're still waiting on the built fwd 01e to be completed, so this is being used as our template. With that simple, yet major victory the golf started to quiver and wet itself, knowing the knife was coming, and there wasn't a damn thing it could do to stop us. We began stripping, prepping, and measuring for the transplant. Before long things like this started landing on the shop floor: An 'adapter' cradle was made to mount the engine, tranny, and subframe to that will become the primary interface to the rear of the golf. Allowing us to drop the entire driveline assembly out with just a handfull of bolts. Then came the moment of truth, time to lower the golf onto it's new heart: Some of the new mounts to the chassis: Resulting in a golf with a slightly different view from underneath once all the mounting points were sorted out: Setting down the new monstrosity for the first time, you can clearly see the fender rework we had in stor for us to run the rubber we wanted: Ahh, that's better : So this brings us all up to speed with where we're at now for the most part. We're working on getting the shift linkage done and some other fab before we finalize things like the cage and firewall. More pictures, and updates as they come can be found here: http://gallery.034motorsport.com/v/GolfV6/Enjoy!

Should be fast and a fun ride. Is everyone coming this year loaded for bear and have you asked the Cayman guys if this build will somehow be cheating?

Wow.... the s4k and time attack a4 just got some competition... That is awesome. have you checked the rear alignment? Always my biggest fear of swapping floor pans and such.

"You'll notice this is a standard quattro 01E setup, we're still waiting on the built fwd 01e to be completed, so this is being used as our template." for a minute there I thought it was going to have a PTO so you could run it with a brush hog in tow! Very, very cool.

i would imagine the 996 rear end is spendy... but way cool project. neat to see the 2.7 tucked in with the 01E .. really makes how that set up works clear. thanks!

I'm not going to lie, I was a bit disappointed when I read the thread title. But DAMN this is awesome. Reminds me of those european guys that did the RWD S3 with the 2.7tt.
Any particular reason you guys didn't want to use the VR6 again?
