Mini update.

Driverside manifold is tact'd up. If the passenger side comes out any better I may end up redoing it. It's a step in the right direction.

Holy shit.. you weren't kidding, were you... You're serious about mounting the turbo outside of the engine bay...

Under the hood?! You crazy?

It's going to be completely out of the hood because quite frankly... theres no room and why not! Haha. But in all honestly theres just really no room.

Are you going to have a cutout in the hood for the turbo? Or are you going to run it without a hood?

I'll have a cutout in the hood for it. If I can I want to daily drive it, because.. why not.

Please don't, it'll ruin the sleeper status. Could you do a rear turbo mount setup?

No choice! I already spent the $$$ on the header kit and they're already pretty much done! Plus it'll make it super easy to work on! Don't judge me!!!

So... some more progress! Rolled the car out for the sake of the wheel bearings and brakes and decided why not put the turbo on it.

The driverside manifold is welded save the collector star and a little bit more of the collector I couldn't reach. Passenger side is 1/2 done, but I ran out of gas. I'm thinking maybe I'll MIG what I can't get with the TIG? I also need to get some steel plate to weld the flanges, but no gas, no rush...

Starting to get somewhere now and I love it haha. Probably weld everything up tomorrow and then I don't know what to do after that... I didn't think I'd make it this far.

I like that you included a pic from the driver's pov so you can see just how ridiculous this is lol. I'm curious to see how you're gonna keep the intercooler piping from blocking the view from the drivers position. Seriously cannot wait to see this thing when it's fully assembled.

I'll end up clocking the turbo and hopefully there will be enough room to sneak it between the y-pipe and the valve cover. I guess I need to do the radiator and Intercooler next

This will be interesting. Very Rotsun/Roadkill.

I'm more interested in the exhaust setup, are you just going straight up with it or putting a full system in?

While roadkill's rotsun used a turbo in the same position as you have it, they had to use a scavenge pump to help with the oil coming out of the exhaust straight onto the windscreen (they had a short dump exhaust setup)

MCM/mighty car mods subarute setup had the Subaru turbo setup same as you have it but did not require the scavenge pump setup from what they showed on the show.

Both episodes with these setup are free to watch on youtube and worth a look at. The mcm setup did have a front mounted intercooler but I don't think the roadkill setup did?

There will be a 70 degree pipe immediately following the turbo/wastegate, but more so that the turbine doesn't hit me in the face IF it decides to let go. I cannot imagine that being any fun.

The front end is on and it looks like I'll be needing a new radiator with 29"x19"x2" dimensions along with the inlet and outlets on the passenger side. I'll try and find a suitable one tomorrow, but in the meantime it's onto the intercooler piping

Got in the Dual Pass Radiator so I went ahead and made some brakes to fit in the stock location as well as the bracket for the intercooler. Coupe more small things to order in the meantime such as coupling reducers for the intake, and power steering / oil / coolant AN lines + fittings. I'm super stoked to begin the harness integration for the ECU, OBD2, and the throttle pedal; wiring fun -> fabricating not.

Just wondering, is it legal to drive on the streets of NJ with no hood? I'm only asking because I know you can't here in PA. They even frown on having things stick out of your hood like that.

I'm not sure. I want to see how much leeway I get with a GA liscense and plates. That being said I'll only be up here for another year or two. Looks like I'll be headed back down to GA after all!

Been a little lazy lately. The build is starting to take a toll on me as I've been slowing down; I've been looking at R32 GTS-T's as a fun car to have in between, but we both know if that happens, I'll never finish this. So, pushing ahead. Intercooler piping is done. Engine's back out so I can make some adjustments to the engine bay. Things to do with the engine out:

-Cut/adjust the motor mount brackets to allow 2" of hockey-pucks
-Relocate ABS controller about 4" lower and make a bracket to hold it
-Reinforce subframe
-Finish welding exhaust Y-Pipe, including wastegate provision.
-Install flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate

Then I'll get the engine back in the car. From there there's not a whole lot I have to do before I can test fire:

-Run the oil lines and oil cooler
-Integrate the stock 7.1.1 ECU and harness with electronic throttle and OBD2
-Mount the throttle pedal

Then I can make some loud noises.

My buddys got an R32 gtst that's pretty nice, not trying to peer pressure you though. Its hard to imagine what this thing will look like with a hood on it and the turbo stickin out but right now it just looks like a piece of art, would make a nice centerpiece lol.

Sorry but I don't get this build. Why not pick a bad example of a UrS car if you're going to make it into a joke?

If Marc could fit two turbo's and a 4.2L under a CQ hood it could have worked here too. This just seems crazy. Throwing a blower on here would have been a good compromise.

The chassis has 282,xxx. Avant's are either clean or on the brink of being sent to a junkyard. This was right in the middle (Perfect for this joke/abomination).

Marc also had one of the leading pre-obd2 powerhouses standing behind him to make that work; I have my garage... lol

Yes, which is exactly why it's happening.

Engine mount brackets are done... 2 Offical Hockey Pucks on each side (the heat treated, stiff as hell ones).

Engines comes back out, install the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate...

Then its wiring time

Finished a good majority of what I'd been dreading/putting off today...

Exhaust manifolds and y-pipe are fully welded together. The Tial 44mm MVR wastegate is installed and ready to scream; also installed, but not pictured are the 2 02 bungs on eitherside of the y-pipe. These will be factory narrowband and I'll save the AEM wideband for post turbo application.

Radiator shroud and fans are mounted. The front support bar needs to be clearenced slightly for the lower fan which I'll get to later. I also need to cut the holes for the fans at work tomorrow with our metal nibbler... One fan will run when the fuel pump has power and the other will either be on a swtichboard or standalone temperature relay. With the larger duel pass radiator, duel 1150cfm fans w/ shroud, and part of the hood missing, the only problems this car will have is GETTING up to temperature... lol

When I get off work tomorrow I will be welding the flange for the Tial BOV (right behind the driverside headlight) and then if I have time I'll pull the engine out and install the Ringer Racing Clutch Kit. It'sa almost time to start wiring this bad boy!

Busy Monday, wrapping it up before I head to work tonight. Pulled the motor and installed the Steveken Flywheel + Ringer Racing Stage 4+ Clutch. Went on like clockwork...

Since I'm running an oil cooled turbo, I don't need all the extra coolant lines under the intake manifold. The driver side cam gear has to come out which means taking the belt off. I wasn't going to do the timing belt, but it'd be stupid not to at this point.

I have a -16AN going into the radiator so I figured putting one of the crossover pipe out simplify things. Exhaust manifold next to the valve cover meant it had to be modified. I'll run a 90 off of it and wrap it over to the passenger side fender, then back to the radiator.

Image20200203_152952 by Joel Francisco
Image20200203_170424 by Joel Francisco

After the last fit up I found a few things that won't work. I'll need to run an 8" fan instead of the 12" for the passenger side. The main 12" fan will open at 180 degree's and the 8" fan will open at 210 degrees. I think that wraps up the cooling. Just need to cut and rotate the radiator outlet to clear the alternator and bing bang done. I have some cleaning up to do in the meantime...

It's getting there, looks a nice clean shell as a base to work with as well.

Out of interest what do you do for a job? I'm a operations manager for a food factory, I miss working lates/nights though.
