It has been a while, but I am determined to make some progress on the '83 over the Winter months.
To that end I installed a 5000W,18K BTU ceiling heater in the garage on Saturday. I read good reviews
of this heater and I can honestly say I love it. I insulated the walls and ceiling several years ago and
installed insulated doors a couple of years back. I had been using a small radiant heater which was
only good it you were very close. This ceiling mounted unit is awesome, so no excuses....

Not one of my favorite jobs and the cold garage gave me an excuse to avoid tackling it.
Spent a few hours cleaning the block, another couple and it should be done. The garage can now
be set at the right temperature, even for painting parts. I know her indoors is thrilled by the prospect.

Any tips on how you got the block and trans 'cleaner than clean'? They look *very* nice!

And.. What's the secret scauce the you are cooking the pistions in? That seems to work quite well too!

Thanks Frank,

For the block and transmission it was naval jelly and lots of wire wheeling.

For the pistons I soaedk them for 24 hours in "Gunk" and then use a green plastic
scowering pad and brake cleaner.

So put the 4kqt back on the road for winter. It has been dormant for
18 months and didn't take kindly to recommisioning. Since it is my daily
driver, reliability is the most important thing. So I started with cosmetics...
obviously....

I tried out some plasti-dip on the Fuchs....

How is the reliability? The white Fuchs must make some kind of a difference?

So a momentous couple of weeks for my '83 ur-q. It started like this:-
Image

Lightened flywheel:-

Image

Windage tray and clearance holes for ARP main bearing studs

Image

I considered both early and late style clutch forks, because I don't like the design
of the later style plastic release bearing:-

Old style

Image

New style

Image

I ended up going with the plastic one, because it is the "correct one"

Engine and transmission ready

Image

It might not look like it, but I made some room and moved the car so I didn't have
to open the doors

Image

Getting close

Image

So, the car came off the road in 1994, after 21 years it finally has an engine and transmission
back in.....

Image

:)

So it's getting cold here and I need to get a winter car ready.... I parked the 4ktq in
the spring when it was running poorly. It over heated in the fall previously and had
been getting worse - culminating with coolant in cylinder #1. The head gasket:-

Image

Image

The head+manifolds+downpipe was a bit of a PITA to remove as everything is heavily rusted....

Anyway I was thinking of putting in a K24. I know this means I need to reprofile the MAC11
boost profile, so does someone have MAC11 code for a K24 on an MC1?

thanks, Mike

My urq has a MAC11 running with a k24. Seems to work well! Coded by someone reputable (but I can't rememeber who)
However.. As I understand, IS also coded to accommodate the urq flywheel, which has the timing pin located a few degrees different than on a MC? If you can get the code out..? :-)

Right - so it's been a while, I think the car came off the road in 1993.
So in celebration of being parked for 25 years.... I am going to finish
what I started. Spring 2019 will see one more quattro back on the road.

Watch this space :)

So still working on the car.... Earlier this year I was very sorry to hear the original owner
of this car, Neil Peart died - way too young.

There has been a bit of progress and I will start posting updates to motivate me and try to get
this finished - 30 years seems like a good round number to complete the "rebuild". Still trying
to beat Steve E.

Also got another bit of a project that I will be working on, stay tuned.

Cheers, Mike
