Hey guys,

So I bought a new car to add to the fleet. This will give me a chance to work on the Audi for longer than a weekend at a time.

Specs:
1988 BMW 530i
3.0L 6 cylinder, 5 speed
167k KM
Imported from Germany about 6 years ago, never winter driven.
The only upgrade is the Alpina wheels; 17x8.5 front, 17x10 rear

Plan:
Give it a very thorough tune up and just drive it. Boost is on my mind but won't be in the cards for at least a few years.
I'm already well into the tune up and will post pics of the progress in a couple days.

Thanks for looking!

BMWs suck.

lol j/k.

I didnt know they made a 530 that wasnt a V8, always cool to learn about alternate euro models.

is the engine part of the M20 or M30 family?

Edit: it looks to be an M30B30 with 9:1. if you want to go boosted, keep an eye on my project thread in a few months. My M30B35 is basically the same engine it seems just with ~460cc's more displacement. I plan on running a holset @ 5-7 psi with an FMU and eventually working my way up to 10-12 psi for hopefully close to 300 whp. I hope to keep the build under a grand. an FMU isnt ideal, but its what alot of kits came with in the past and some continue to... if it works... why not?

yours is much prettier than mine.

Very nice! Awesome color. Smoked lenses would look good against that color. I am watching a neighbor (loser) lady kill her e34. Poor thing...smokes more and more each time I see it. Once the engine goes I will offer her 500 bux and maybe I will have one of these projects too. :-D

Thanks for the compliments, guys!

Yes this will be a summer only car. I was looking for an all season car in case something came up with the Audi, but it's far too clean to expose to the salt.

Justin, I'll be keeping an eye on your thread, I'm sure we will have to work through similar quirks associated with these cars. I've never owned a BMW before, if it's anything like the Audi I'm sure I'll have my hands full!
And you're correct, it is an M30B30. I think the previous generation 5 series had it, and some 7 series as well. Have you seen http://www.millerperformancecars.com/???

And I'm still debating about putting clear/smoked corners on it... might have to look at some more pictures...

Honestly... and I know I'll probably get flamed for this, but working on the BMW has been easier than Working on my audi so far.

The valves should be adjusted every 20k or so, so if she ticks a bit that might be something you want to check/adjust... its very easy.
http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Maintenan ... adjust.htm

Miller performance is really cool... I'd love their big MAF and WAR chip for when I go boosted but you cant monitor when you are running so you have to sorta guess, try, re-guess, repeat and it costs close to $700 once all is said and done. you can get DIY Plug n Play Megasquirt for under $500, spend a few nights after work building it and get rid of the MAF completely and be able to monitor and do real time changes. But MS has its positives and negatives. For my purposes on this cheapo car, an FMU and $175 TCD (turbocharging dynamics) timing chip will do just fine.

This is my "starter" E34, its beat right now but I still love the car, it just drives and handles really well, even though mine clunks and stuff... I have all the stuff to freshen the susp. though. Some day itll probably get dismantled for spares and a nicer specimen will be purchased...

Justin, so far I agree with you in that working on the BMW is easier than the Audi. Everything I've done so far has come apart real nice, and access to everything is great. And yes, I've already done the valve adjustment.. see below

The rear control arm mounts in the following picture were completely toast. I also changed the front sway bar links. Rear sway links and front thrust arms are on order. That should sort out the suspension.

There is an oil spray bar mounted above the valve train on these engines, and oil is fed into the bar through 2 banjo bolts. You can see it missing in the top left portion of the picture, and the banjo bolt itself in the bottom right portion of the picture! It also had the valve train tick, which I'm hoping the adjustment will have fixed. (I'm waiting on spark plug wires to start it back up)

After

I also pulled the resonator and rear muffler off. No rust or holes but very loud. I have a stainless steel system on order from Billy Boat. I'll be installing that in a couple weeks.

You have I'd say the perfect wheels! The only others to consider would be Racing Dynamics. Great work!

Thanks, I get a hard-on every time I look at them.

And I cannot WAIT to get these monsters mounted!

Makes the 215s on the Audi look like bike tires!

wow nice work!

my exhaust is half missing, lol.

one of my banjo bolst was a bit loose but not missing like that! your cam doesnt look to be worn though... so thats good.

I changed my rear sway links and the lil dogbone things too, mine were QUITE shot... they make a bit of a difference!

I still need to do the rest of the suspension though...

If you got by with the missing banjo bolt and no cam damage(easily spotted on these cars) then you are lucky. Apparently the new bolts have loc tite on them, but still I would check them every time I do an adjustment.

2nd. One of the how-to's for the valve adjustment the guy used a lil tiny drill and drilled through the head of the banjo bolt and saftey-wired the bolt after re-installing it. I was going to do that but it was around 11:30 pm when I was starting to put everything back together so I just cleaned the bolt up really well and loctited it. next adjustment itll get drilled new OEM bolts and saftey wire.

Hey guys,

It's been a while since I updated this project thread, as well as my Audi thread which I will do soon.

Since the last update there have been the following changes:
- Tires installed
- New exhaust
- Replaced the clutch after the release bearing took a poop
- Made a license plate bracket
- Changed all the fluids including coolant, engine oil (a few times now), transmission oil, differential oil
- Changed the fuel filter

I've also put over 5000 km on the car in the past month, driving from Ottawa to Halifax, then to Newfoundland, and various location around Nova Scotia. I was pretty nervous taking the car on a long distance drive having barely driven it, but it hasn't hiccuped once and I now have full confidence in the car. I'm now based in Halifax and have several other road trips planned around the East coast.

On to the pictures:

I'm away from home for the next 5 months on a work assignment, so with all this extra time on my hands I'm trying to take full advantage of the beautiful East coast summer we've been having. Definitely more to come!

All these years I thought the E34's were only 4 or 6 cyl. Seems kinda odd that the 530 and 540 were V8, when the M5 had a 6 cyl, with more power...

I couldn't imagine what a 4 cylinder would be like in a car this size, or even the smaller 6s. The 3L six is SLOW, but sounds so nice. I can't wait to start modifying this engine.
