I drove an e34 520i while visiting family in Sweden (many years ago). I'd only started driving so I was more-than-pleased just to be driving a bimmer in the first place... no doubt she'd feel a little sluggish!

Has the exhaust 'opened-up' at all with all those miles on her now?

Hey Erik!
I think it's because I was used to the Audi. They are totally different animals. That said, when I'm back in a couple weeks I'll be downgrading to the K26 for winter reliability (cold temp seal problem in the hybrid).
What are you up to from the 2nd to the 12th (Aug)?? I'll be in town during that period and working on the garage/audi (vacation!!!).
We've also got another Ottawa - Audi member, an A4 but I'm sure we can make an exception and let him hang out with us :P (it's Sean, the guy who races bikes!)

Re Exhaust: Something has definitely changed in the last 5k km because the car sounds more... I dunno, angry. Before I left for Halifax is sounded soft and gentle, now it takes every ounce of will power not to rev it past 4k. I'll show you in November when I'm back for good.

Nice bimmer Barry
I've got a buddy in Calgary with basically the same car and 2 yrs ago I helped him install an ERT power adder kit.

Now he leaves M3's behind like they were tied to a stump.

I've always liked BMW's for their ease to work on....its like they were designed by German mechanics and Audi's were designed by German interior decorators.

Thanks Jeff!

What's an ERT power adder kit?

Definitely agree with you on how easy they are to work on! Of all the things I've done to it so far, I haven't done any cursing. Actually that's a lie, I had 2 exhaust manifold studs (not on the block, ones that connect to the cat piping) break and they were not fun to remove. So aside from that everything has gone smooth!

The kit consisted of a Procharger, fmu, mounting plate, belt and tensioner and it took less than 2 hrs to install.
The kit worked good right out of the box but later on he had a custom chip done and got rid of the fmu.
The 3.0 has a 9.0:1 compression ratio and took to boost like gulf pelicans to greasy fish.

With any luck I'll be 'upgrading' to a 'K26' around the same time as you're downgrading lol. Why dont'cha put the summer turbo on the summer car :-p

Another crazy electrical storm here tonight... Looks like a place got hit behind the shoppers drug mart from my vantage point... Sirens didn't stop for at least 20 minutes. I can see the smoke just like when your parents neighbours got hit.

Any other plans when you're back? I'll be around (am moving on the 31st)

Hey guys,

Time to revive this thread! Not a lot has changed since my last update. Since I've been living in an apartment in Halifax I haven't really been able to do anything fun to the car. I did drive it back to Ottawa last week, so now it's parked in the garage for the winter.

About a month ago while I was in Halifax an exhaust rocker arm broke, and my only options were to have a shop rebuild the head (big $$), or drive it back on 5 cylinders and rebuild it this winter. I drove it back :)

In preparation for the 15 hour drive, I disconnected the injector and loosened the spark plug. I also tied the remnants of the rocker arm with safety wire so that it wasn't flopping around on the cam.

The car made the trip without any issues. I kept it above 3k RPM and it was actually pretty smooth. Below that or accelerating and it was a bit rough.

Plan for the winter:
- Rebuild the cylinder head
- Fabricate a header (I think)
- Replace the rear subframe bushings
- Some cosmetic things, like replace some trim pieces, maybe do the shadow line mod, smoked or clear corners
...

More to come in the next couple months once I start working on it!

How is that possible on an Ontario car?
With the amount of salt we see this should be impossible.
Wish my driveshaft bearing hanger was this clean too.

Always liked the look of this 5 series (preferable in M variant).

Cheers

That's a great looking E34.

Careful with the M60 block, you might have a Nikasil block which was blamed for a lot of premature wear due to the high sulfur content of US and UK gas.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M60#The_Nikasil_problem

Check the serial number on the side of your block.

I think it is a Grey market import (from Europe).

Frank the Tank is right, the car was imported into Canada about 6 years ago, and (I was told) it was never winter driven. The underside definitely reflects this! I'm now sitting at 175k KM (~110K miles).
And I agree, an M5 in this body style would be the bees knees. Ever see Ronin?? That was the first time an E34 really caught my attention, what a machine!

Although it's a 530i, it's an '88 5 series that was not sold in NA. It has a smaller version of the 3.5L 'Big Six' inline six.... a 3.0L, engine code M30B30. When I take it off the road next winter, it will be M30B30T :)

LOL, thats what I get for assuming and not reading the entire post.

It's still a great looking E34. Good luck!

Love it !

I deeply miss my 91 M5.

Sold her 2 years ago, and I'm trying to buy her back this coming Spring since the new owner is close by.

The e34 is an awesome platform in all its variants. I kept up pretty good w/ a modded Mini Cooper S at Lime Rock.

My s38 was rebuilt, euro cam gear, Conforti tune,Dinan suspension, custom 18x8.5 / 18 x 10 SSR type C's. I've never owned a car that made me smile as much. I've had plenty cars w/ more power, but none screamed like the s38.

I hope you rebuild the 530. Bodie and the guys at Miller make some cool stuff like a Maf upgrade and I think you can add a Cat cam or Shrick to yours.

Here are some old pics...Image

Thanks Justin! Good to hear you'll be able to work on your car this winter in comfort. I think we're the only two with active E34 project threads here... :P

BarTender.. wtf is wrong with you!!! You sold THAT car?? :slap: :D
You had a beautiful car and I hope you get it back! It would be nice if you could post a few more pictures.

The engine will be getting a rebuild this winter. Miller MAF and WAR chip will be making their way onto the car at the same time (I'll also look at my cam options as it will be a good time), but I'll leave the rest stock until next winter.

Hey Justin! The car has been sitting in the garage since November and I've been poking away at it slowly. I've recently ordered all the parts for the head rebuild, well, all except for the MAF conversion. I decided to order the Ireland Engineering headers and 284* camshaft, can't wait to hear this when it's done.
My brother is picking up the headers for me tonight, so I'll try and get a couple pictures up!

Regarding the wheels/tires, I'm not sure on the offset, but the rears are 10" wide with 265 tires. I think the fronts are 8.5" and the tires are 235.

In america the late m30s were only common in 3.2 3.4 and 3.5 but europe had 2.5, 2.8 and 3.0 some of which we got in the 60s/70s.
