Thank you. We are also glad to get the car back together.
We are planning on running the 100 Acre Wood Rally, Southern Ohio Forest Rally and Show-Me Rally.

Here is a few more pictures of the car as we finished up some of the last details.
I will update again after the rally.

We now have all 4 doors with working handles. For all of you that have owned Audi's you will know that working door handles are a rare thing.

Lights and grill are finished, Just need a few vintage Audi stickers and we are ready to race.

We run the Open Light Class, (Naturally Aspirated All Wheel Drive) in the Rally America series.
Historic class is not an actual class for Rally America, but we do like keeping the car looking like the original quattro.

Interesting. There's so many quirks to the rally America rule book. Rules for a class that doesn't exist. Rules that have by rules that can be ignored if other precautions are taken. Yikes. My toes are getting cold going into my CQ build

The rule book is not so bad. If you are building an Open Light car it is rather straight forward and you are not limited very much on what you can modify.

100 Acre Wood 2017 Update.

All went well at the race. No problems at all. It was a good first event for the new car. We started cautiously and increased the pace throughout the event.
Rally-America does not show our finish for the event but we finished well for the first race on the new car
I think we finished 14th in class (34th overall) for day 1 and 6th in class (27th overall) day 2.

Next event will be the Southern Ohio Forests Rally on May 19-20.

Enjoy the pictures.

In a attempt to stop large rocks from wedging between the rear brake pads I made some caliper hole covers. I found some pictures of an original Audi rally car and their rear calipers are solid, no holes. I hope my cover stops the rocks, we seem to pick up a lot of them on stage.

Bolted and welded in place.

Just a few more details before the Southern Ohio Forest Rally

Finished the brake proportioning valve install. The factory Audi unit was leaking.
The new Wilwood (260-12627) valve fit nicely in the engine compartment.
This is one more item to check off the list. Less than 2 weeks to the Southern Ohio Forest Rally.

Southern Ohio Forest Rally Update:
The event went very well for us. Car did great and we survived the roads and the heat in the car the first day.
Only real issue was a rear axle nut coming loose at the first service and a CV joint that was also coming loose, both were tightened at service and checked the rest of the weekend.
Also had a little run in with fence post during the very wet and muddy head to head super special. See the pictures for the dent.
The super special was fun. We raced head to head with the Audi 90 of Johansen and Little. They ended up getting 3rd in the national rally standing, I am not sure how long it has been since an Audi has been in the top three but I am sure it is has been many years.

Results for Friday Regional Rally 16th overall and 7th in the Open Light Class (46 regional cars)
Saturday Regional Rally Results 15th overall and 6th in the Open Light Class.
For the National Standings of the two days we were 18th overall and 4th in class (62 cars started), one place off the podium.
The roads were very tight and had a lot of tight corners with drops on the outside. We were happy with our speed and look forward to doing this event again.

Enjoy the pictures and videos.

Stayed at the Ravenwood Castle, Very nice place and close to the first day service.

Show-Me Rally update.
All went well at the 2017 Show-Me rally. No issues with the car at all. The weather was also great, had rain half way through the event that took the dust away and cooled the temperature down. We ended the event 5th in the Open Light class and 7th overall out of 24 cars. Comparing times from our last running of the event we were faster on each stage, so we are moving in the right direction. Check out the pictures and the videos, the spectator area was very good, the best we have looked at any spectator area yet. Thanks to Javad at 034 Motorsport for the push to go faster, we are working on it.
Enjoy.

Nice going. Question. Would you still be in the same class if you ran a 7A?

Greg,
Thank you.

Yes we would still be in the same class with a 7A engine. Open Light is all wheel drive and no turbo. There is a displacement cap as well.
Here is a quote from the Rally-America rules about the open light class

"Open Light Class: Vehicles must be AWD, normally-aspirated and
derived from models sold globally in minimum quantities of 1000.
The maximum displacement is 2650cc for overhead cam engines
and 3313cc for pushrod engines."

Hey guys,

Thanks for the updates! So awesome to see the 4k rallying. I wanted to do SOHO this year but couldn't make it. What rallies are you planning next year? Hope we can have our cars on stage together.

Nick

Have you thought about running a tall block 7A with EFI? Would probably give you about 75 % more horsepower, more torque and better rod ratio.

We will run 100 Acre Wood and Show-Me in 2018, and we will try to make it back to Ohio if the dates work out like they did this year.
This will be our projected race schedule for 2018.
I hope you can make it to one of the same races we are running. We always love to see more quattros and race with them.

We have not thought about it much.
We have a lot of 10v engines and heads and no 20v heads, so that was the direction we went.
We did some modifying to the 10v engine by using flat top 1.8 jetta pistons which we estimate gives us around a 13:1 compression ratio and we have the Techtonics Tuning cam in it and run 034 EFI, so we are making a good amount of power.
We might have to look into a 20v sometime in the future, but for now we are working on other things like suspension.

Update on the Rally Car.
Installed a new fuel pressure regulator, the VP 109e does not play nice with rubber and the old regulator was starting to get eaten up.
Brake reservoir was leaking from the bottom grommets so I replaced them.
Also eliminated the rubber feed and return line from the fuel tank. There was always a smell of fuel under the car from the fuel making it out through the rubber lines. We will have Teflon lines from back to front now, -8an for the feed line and -6an for the return. The compression fitting for the feed line was an odd size, 12mm, but I found one online and my brother did some creative welding to a -8AN fitting. The return is a more standard 8mm and was easy to find.
100 Acre Wood is getting closer. Should have the tank back in this weekend and then I will see if it leaks.

Update on the 2018 100 Acre Wood Rally.
Car did well and so did the drive and co-driver.
Finished Day 1 in 23 overall and 8th in class.
We noticed that we were feeling fast but our times were a little slower that what we knew we could run.
Day 2 went well, the Cattle Jump was good. Lost some time in the Huzzah SS, missed the turn into the woods
Finished Day 2 in 23 overall and 10th in class.
In the National Standings we finished 26th overall and 8th in class.
Had some fuel issues on the 2nd day. With the longer transits we ran short on fuel for the last loop of stages (we run VP 109E) and we had to fill up with 10 gallons of E85. Worked well but we did loose some power, but we finished.
After the Race we found the reason we were a little slow on stage. The rear differential was very stiff, we could not push the car in neutral on the concrete shop floor. We removed it after the race and it looks like it was rebuilt at some point and the output bearing was over tightened.
We are switching back to the original rear differential after replacing a leaky seal.

Enjoy the pictures and the video.

Nice! I didn't know you were running 109 gas. It's an N/A 10v right? You you running gobs of timing?

I too would like to change to aluminum radiator for weight saving.

Yes it is a N/A 10v and Timing is moderate, but we installed flat top pistons from a 1.8l jetta so it made the compression ratio very high, we estimate 12:1, maybe higher. This along with the higher lift cam we made a non-interference engine an Interference Engine.
The first race we tried to use 95 octane and blew the ends off 2 spark plugs. So High octane we went.
VP gives a good price break on the fuel through Rally-America so that helps but the fuel cost is still high.
But it makes for a good running engine and smells so much better than E85.
I will give a weight comparison between the radiators once I get the old one out. We have not had any cooling issues with the factory radiator but it is starting to leak at the bottom so this will stop the leak.
