Trying to figure out how to remove these inserts to mount a rack on the coupe. I can’t seem to get them to budge, are they just caps that pop out, I’m trying not to destroy them, however I haven’t seen a coupe that had these pieces still in them. I’m sure they’re NLA, but if I have to drill into them to take them out, I’ll have to make the sacrifice.

They are not NLA. You will not get them out without breaking them in my experience.

Good to know, thanks. What did you end up using to remove them? I’m trying to squeeze a flathead behind to see if I can pry it out but it’s not working too great

I just took a flat head in the middle of it and popped it with my hand to break it in half. Then just grab the pieces and pull them out. I'll try to find the thule instructions that shows it.

They show it on the side, and pry out, but I would be worried about damaging the trim.

Awesome, I was thinking the same, could easily jam something in but wasn’t trying to damage the surrounding trim. Thanks a bunch

This seems like a perfect part to 3D print. I'm gonna try to find mine and add it to the long list of projects.

So I played a little with TinkerCAD and think I have a reasonable copy of this piece. For the search engines, this is part 895860219.

I have not tested as I don't have a 3D printer. If you print it, LMK how it turns out.

Nice job, That's actually pretty awesome. If someone does end up printing them I'd grab a set to have. I destroyed mine upon removal

I have a 3d printer and am willing to print them for others.

I’ve not touched the inserts on my car and TBH I’m trying my best to leave them alone.

I’m gonna try to print a set and try them on Dave’s car this weekend.

I dont think the factory part was ever made to be replaceable - one time only and destroyed on removal.
I'd love to have a replacement part say in a nylon like material that is removable.

Oh... So I'm going to break my oem ones

Oh you all know better than that! My CQ will obviously have a roof rack at some point anyways...

Interesting observation, and certainly possible.

Nylon is certainly an appealing material for this, I wonder if it would need to be carbon fiber filled in order tolerate multiple insertions/removals.

look great- how do they hold up to being inserted and removed multiple times?

I didn't have any trouble removing. I used a fine angled pick to get under the edge and then lifted up. I suppose I could make a version with a small hole on the surface of the exposed part to hook into and lift up/out.
