3b distributor gear, "simply drive out pin"... Right...

I'm trying to get the plastic gear off dr. Mike's distributor and I can not get this stupid pin to budge. Seems pretty obvious which way it comes out, I just don't want to hit it much harder for fear of breaking it. Any suggestions?

I just cut the gear off the spare engine dizzy today. Its a knurled surface on the shaft and inside the gear. I firgured it would be easier to hammer the pin out with no gear. Is the brass gear supposed to work with this type also?:

I ended up doing it the same way, I felt like I messed something up having to bust out the dremel. 034's instructions were to "simply drive out the pin", so I was a little concerned. Once we cut the pin down it came right out, and we used a $0.29 spring pin to re-secure it. Less distributor rattle now, thanks yoda.

Yeah it was rather taxing and we used multiple power tools. In the end Paradox got it down a bit and I sacrificed a drill bit flipping it and using the butt on the pin and finished it right out.

We also found a novel way to remove the tamper shield with the intake mani on. You can get to it through the top by the throttle body. Using a non elegant screwdriver and hammer you can knock it out of the way and then pull the dizzy.

I went through the same shenanigans last summer. I ended up grinding the pin down as suggested, and pressing the pin out with a vice and a couple junk sockets. (3 mm allen on the pressing side, and a 5 mm 1/4 drive on the opposite side). I too used a hardware store roll pin, which I ground to the same length as the gear diameter. Worked great!

U have a pic of that? I get a bunch of dizzy rattle... I as well have a steel or brass gear.

I went to Ace with the gear... Grabbed one of the old timers and he found a spring pin that worked perfect. It was snug and required some force to fit in the gear. Sadly I was remiss in my camera use. Worst case, if you need me to, I will go back to Ace and photo one. It's hardened steel and snugged up nicely. I hear ZERO dizzy rattle when the rpms drop. I used to get it so bad I thought I had lifters going.
***HEY 034....PLEASE INCLUDE A PIN WITH THE GEAR FOR FUTURE SALES... The stock one is unsuable after removal.

Good info here! Don't mean to thread jack, but does anyone know where to get new distributor seals? Mine seems to be leaking oil through the shaft.
There is no seal on the shaft. The only seal is an o-ring at the base of the dizzy that seals it to the head.

ive swapped a few and the pin has been reusable each time, take your time and don't mash it up. a bit of pre-soaking will make it a bit easier

Hmmm.. Any thoughts on why my hall sensor and lowest portion of the dizzy cap's inside always have oil on them?

What? How/why are you reusing a pin that the ends need to be ground off to remove the pin itself?? Thus making the pin not long enough to hold the gear in place any longer. A new roll pin from a hardware store is less than $1. And further more replacing just the roll pin isn't make distributor gear rattle go away.

Crankcase breather issues.

I would suggest my brass gear made my dizzy chatter go away...not the pin. The pin was a nice cheap score though.
