Took the 272 cam out and put a stock MC cam in.

It looks close to the #1 cam cap. Machine shop measure 3 thousands between them. Is this ok?

Put the distributor in and check the clearance on the gears.
There's no real way for it to be wrong iirc, it's hard to tell in those pics but are the cam lobes centered on the lifters?

No they are slightly off center of the lifters...

Looks like the end cap is on correctly, and the others are backwards...

I just went to the pull barn and pulled out a MC, NF and NG head and confirmed that the caps are on correctly... :(

Also FWIW I bought the car with a 272 cam installed in this head. That cam is now sold and on it's way to CT.

I took a MC1 cam we had sitting on the shelf from another head and put this in. I didn't think it would matter??? Should I try another cam???

I'm a bit nervous about running this head the way it is with that lobe being so close to the cam cap.

I just had this head pressure checked, guides checked, new seals put in for the hell of it and had it decked. Suprisingly there were no cracks between the valve seats...

Steve,

Sorry for the non-specifics here, but is there a thrust bearing in that head? (to control lateral movement of the cam as it's in operation?

0.003 isn't touching, but as RPM increases it the cam walks even a hair.. less than a curly one too.. and your done.

I also agree that somethings not right there, the lobes should be centered on the lifter.

Steve I think your fine. The caps would have snapped in half had you installed them backwards. Tomorrow I'll take a ride to the garage and verify for sure. But I recall it being real close like that.

Not sure from the pics, but if you look at the cap numbering doesn't it look like #2 on the cap is pointing the wrong way compared to the others?
Right, thats how they are from the factory. I confirmed this tonight when I compared it to the extra MC, NF and NG heads we have laying around.

Dam, mighty fine line there, the German engineers are testing you....??? Kinda like apples and oranges, I think it's time to check part ##'s, but I will have a look at how close things are on the KH head and stock cam on my rig. Unless the head and cam are not directly related part # wise refer to year the cam's # and then the year of the head by part # and chassis then compare them to the chassis's year. They may have made changes on some production runs. Mine is close, but not that close on #1. Just because the head is from that block means nada.......

Looks similar to the AAH heads on the shop floor. FYI - lobs off center on lifters to rotate them.

Just my $.02
