Blimey !!!!!!!!!

This is starting to get out of hand :)

Thanks for all the comments people, you making me want to start another project, any suggestions?????

build an A/C Cobra with an S8 engine in it :D

I don't about what project but I suggest that you video it loads, edit it for DVD and sell the DVD to *help fund the project. I'd buy one.

* Ok so it's not going to cover more than a small fraction of the project cost but it'd be fun to watch.

I've always wanted to see an I5 sand rail or dune buggy or something. I was thinking about doing it with my spare MC engine, But i know i'll never get to it. Just one of those "if only i had the time and money" projects.

Nearly, but better an S8 with a Big Block Yank Mill or an AMG Sledge Hammer type lump with a bit-o-forced induction! Just to be sure! :eek:

Ps, the tricky bit will prolly be finding a gearbox... What do Ultima use?

hmm... LS1 turbo'd A8L... now that would be NICE :D

Great project Hilly. There are so many that attempt a large motor into a mid-engine car swap, and so few have completed it. Kudos to you for your craftsmanship as well. You should open your own custom car shop!

Superb job, thank you for showing what is possible.

Out of interest, how do you find the gearing of the diesel box suits the V8? The reason I am asking is I considered the very same gearbox/engine combination for installation into the back of a mid engined kit car (now called a Spire GTR). In the end I plumped for something else, but it is still an itch I want to scratch :wink:

The 6 speed TDi gearbox has worked out spot on for ratios.
With 245/45 17 tyres the ratios go something like this

1st = 5 mph/1000rpm
2nd = 10 mph/1000rpm
3rd = 15 mph/1000rpm
4th = 21 mph/1000rpm
5th = 26 mph/1000rpm
6th = 32 mph/1000rpm

I can get to 60 easily in second gear.

This also give a good spread of gears for the spirited stuff and a nice quite cruise on the motorway.
1st gear could do with being a bit higher as it has a habit of spinning one wheel wet or dry, although I'll fix that by fitting wider rear tyres and a ATB diff from Quaife.

Overall very happy with it.

where is your redline sited at? I mean with 7000rpm you could theoretically hit ca 225 mph :D
only thing that keeps you back is the lack of power 8)

Yeap, 7K rpm :)

hilly, have you attempted a top speed run? What did you top out at?

Nothing a turbo and some aero tweaks cant fix ;)[/quote]

Just a quicky, those things with CC Sport etched on the bearing carriers are incorrectly made and a potential deathtrap.

They come assembled to the unit for a reason, they are badly made.

The spherical bearing should be a PRESS/Tolerance fit, the housing is 4.5thou oversized. This means that bearing is moving about eating the carrier with every stone and rock.

Eventually it'll pull through and the unit will fail, the CC Sport item will need replacement before long.

Really shonky engineering. Use at your own risk. :roll:

I take it you have looked at a set of these to come up with feedback like that.

I have already got some anti pull through washers to go on in case of failure of the rose joint which are due to go on over the hols.

I have been keeping a close eye on the replacements and will be taking them off for inspection over the Crimbo break to see if there are any potential issues.
If they have worked loose then I'll have to re-thing about their continued use on the car.

The other option is to use some Loctite 638 High strength retainer to hold the rose joint in place within the carrier. This stuff is very good at fixing parts together yet relatively easy to dis-assemble. It would certainly prevent the rose joint from moving.

Been noted by a few people who take stuff apart before fitting it, laughed at by many an engineer.

Most of these people will be making their own carrier and welding it into the wishbone.

I know loctite or 638/633 etc would in theory be ok but the circlip is a bit loose so there is up and down movement also, so vertical sheer as well as lateral and rotational, just I'd rather it properly made in the first place.

Well done on the pull through washer idea, that was my first thought when I looked at the carrier, when is it gonna kill me.

Hi Hilly

Just spotted your Esprit in the teaser for next months Practical Performance Car magazine! Looks like it's going to be the main article for that month- Nice one!
