Audi 90 B4 FWD to AWD conversion

I'm new to forums but i just recently bought my second Audi 90. My first was the FWD V6 2.8 auto, then just picked up a FWD V6 2.8 manual. My overall goal is to put I5 in my 90 but I need it AWD. My question is has anyone converted their FWD 90 into an AWD? What do I need to perform this "surgery"? The only reason I am considering this is because finding a B4 90Q has been a lost cause in the US for me. If anyone has any info PLEASE let me know.
Thanks. CT

Welcome. The only fwd's i've seen converted were a B2 coupe gt and a cabriolet(B4 IIRC). Honestly, you would be far better off getting a B3 80 or 90 quattro instead of trying to convert your B4 to I5 and quattro. Or if you are set on a B4, get a B4 quattro and convert that to I5. To do what you are asking about would require extensive modification to the floor for attaching the quattro rear subframe and suspension. Not so sure about how that would effect the fuel system, but expect that to be different on a quattro. You would basically need a quattro to rob all the parts for, so why not just start with a quattro and build that into what your ultimate goal is. Not trying to rain on your parade, to each their own. Best of luck with whichever way you decide to go.

Completely agree. There was a guy around me that attempted to convert a b3 fwd to quattro. It was a whole lot more work then he had anticipated and he ended up scrapping the whole build. The b4 would be even more dificult since you would need to change the fuel tank as well. Best of luck, iirc there was a nice clean b4 in the swap meet not that long ago, it might still be available.

Lots of misinformation going on here.

The B4 chassis is the easiest car you can imagine converting from FWD to AWD. All cars already have the attachment points for both rear suspension types. The floor pans are identical for both drivelines. The fuel tank differs.

Read this thread for lots of good swap info. http://www.motorgeek.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=39033&hilit=b4+avant+rally

Even still, it would be a lot of work to convert when that work could go into a turbo setup or other perf upgrades and finding a B4 quattro being difficult...huh? I thought you were going to say you were in Australia or something lol. Where would you get the quattro drivetrain? From a quattro? :tard:

Does this apply to the convertible as well?

as people pointed out - it's actually pretty straight forward to do...I found a rusty B4 with a good drivetrain that I used for donor - 400$ got me EVERYTHING! Also if I understand it correctly - the B5 backend is identical to the B4 so that is another source for the swap...even over here you can find B5s in the sub 500$ range due to busted engines, rusty bodies, costly repairs etc...

depending on what you plan to do with the car, the gas tank might not be an issue - you can use a bladder or even get a tank off a B3 which sits in the trunk...

hit me up with any specific questions but I tried my best to document everything in the thread quoted above...
